Morton Island.

I'm taking the kids over this weekend style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif and was wondering if anybody knows of any good camping spots on the ocean side. Secluded, protected and really close to the beach sort of thing.

Also any info on the track conditions would be great.

Hi BMac,

I just returned from a trip to Fraser, Morton and Stradbroke so here goes. There are literally hundreds of secluded and well protected spots on the eastern beach. I would suggest going to the Blue Lagoon camping area, there are large undefined sites and you will be close to flushing toilets, showers (cold) and drinking water. You will also be close to the Blue Lagoon itself for a refreshing dip when it gets hot and Bulwer settlement if you need supplies. The island is small enough to drive across to the Western side (takes about 30min) if you fancy a swim at the Tangalooma wrecks or north to Cape Morton.

The inland tracks, especially the one going from the western to eastern beach is soft sand so I would suggest lowering tyre pressure to 18psi or whatever suites your vehicle/tyres. We came across a few blokes with trailers who struggled through there but having said that .. they were in toyosans so you'll be fine :wink: The tracks are not overly rutted so relatively easy to drive.

Must see on the island: Tangalooma wrecks (snorkel there if you can), Cape Morton lighthouse, drive from Tangalooma resort to Kooringal along the western beach (you will go past "Big Sandhills" if the kids are keen on sand boarding) and .... if you want the most spectacular view of the island .. go up Mount Tempest. It's a 7km return walk .. not easy but well worth the effort style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Another mate said Blue Lagoon so its sounds like the go. I'm not taking the trailer so I shouldn't need to worry about getting bogged. Reversing a trailer in soft sand is a total ***** :roll:

Finally got a set of stauns ( set to 18 psi ) style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif and I can't wait to roll a smoke while they do their job.

Thanks for the must see as well. My youngest is only 6yo so the mountain trek will probably be more work than fun ( for me anyway ).

I just hope the rain/wind gods like me style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

when where you and where were you at fraser,was looking all over for the grey landy but all i saw was a heap of landy rentals,and a couple of extremes,blue and green,but no grey 8)

We spent 7 days on Fraser ... left the island on Boxing day. (Just in time I might add ... it looked like a highway going North 8O ) I was also on the lookout for you .. but sadly no sign :cry:

Where did you spend most of your time? I noticed in Vlad's trip report he scoped out the Waddy Point campground for you.. we stayed there as well ... good spot.
