That Defender didn't sound too well and looked like it wasn't going far, at the end of that vid.

Couple of concerns: Using snatch starp (or possibly tow rope) as a drag chain. And people standing waaaayyyy too close to taut winch cables.

The clip is from Gembrook, i was the one behind the camera that day i think.

The red toyota was just proving the point that MTR's are useless in the Victorian mud. The RR is running Simex and the grey LC is running Silverstone.

To access all the vids on that site just go to http://www.online4x4.net/mediagallery.htm

Check out the June and September 04 Gembrook trips. These have my RR in them also. 8)

Which ones????

The biggest problem in Gembrook then was not traction but clearance.
On one of the hills, Mick (the grey RR) was running about 8psi in his 35's and was really struggling to get up the hill. I had mine at about 25psi from memory and drove it easily. This was all due to me not scraping my diffs wereas Mick was.

I have only watched the 1st one as yet, but i alwasy thought you werent supposed to drive whilst winching because it prevented the cable from packing back onto the drum properly. thats what they keep saying in the 4wd monthly gold label edition recovery guide. Matt

TuffRR
20th January 2005, 04:48 PM
Ace - that is definately true for slower low mount winches but we are using high mounts which have a much faster retrieval speed under no load. Ideally, we still don't drive faster than the winch can retrieve but this is not always possible.
This also reduces the load on the winch and battery as it doesn't need to work as hard and also speeds up recovery times.
We also are using plasma rope which does not suffer damage on the drum in the same way that standard wire rope would.

HTH.

BTW, as a driving instructer, there is a lot of things that i dont agree with in 4wd Monthly!!! 8O

Thanks for that TuffRR, i did notice the plasma rope. As i dont have a winch yet i am keen to know the ins and outs of it all. And i to have thought some of the things taught by 4wd Monthly have been a bit suss.

Perhaps their guides are for people who don't know what they are doing at all. The business suits out in the bush for the weekend in their Lexus's types.
