There are heaps of 110's still in the army, especially in Townsville, so all these will eventually be replaced over the next few years.

I think they'll be around on the secondhand market for a fair while, if the last big sell off is anything to go by they'll even drop in price (except for some rarer variants) when some folks realize they don't want to drive it to work every day, can't lock a soft top etc. Then there'll be the guy who breaks a front axle or something, gets a million dollar story from a mechanic and sells it off cheap...

For what you get, and I got a rebuilt FFR with winch from Minto a few months ago, its one heck of a lot of truck for around $10k, plus insurance and rego. I also picked up 2 good trailers so I for one are not complaining about price ;);)
Dropped down to have a look at this auctions offerings at Minto today, to see the 4 RFSV's and liked a couple, impressive trucks, but noticed there were also plenty of the standard 4x4's on offer, and a lot of lousy trailers.

You get a heck of a lot of what? I have an '89 FFR, an '85 County 110 and a Series 2a. Sorry to break it to you, the FFR is closer to a Series 2a, the County closer to a Defender, and the County is cheaper. You don't get a whole lot of much with an ex-army 110. A robust base vehicle, yes (same as my County). A great blank canvas, sure. But nothing else. Not even a cigarette lighter socket.
By the time you bring the conveniances and technical specs of an army 110 up to the level of a County or Defender, you'd have spent another 6 or 7 grand I reckon, more if you paid someone to modify it for you. Heck, power steering alone is a few thousand if professionally done, or about a thousand in parts. Then there is better suited coil springs, a roof, stereo, door locks, keyed ignition, centre console, larger fuel tank, NVH insulation, potentially an aircon...there's a lot to do, if those things are important to you.
I love my FFR, once a few more alterations are made it'll suit me just nicely and am definitely not selling it but geez there are some blinkered view points around.

Well I owned a LWB '65 Series 2A and performance wise I struggle to see the similarity. My '65 was absolutely gutless, broke axles just looking at a gutter, couldn't handle any sort of load and you needed a week to drive between cities, it seemed to take forever crawling up every hill in 2nd gear and I used to pray to see the next 10km sign !!!!
I didn't buy the Perentie to recreate a commercial version .. I wanted a damm simple, robust and reliable machine that performed with a decent load. I have owned 2 quite luxurious Pajero Exceeds, but cannot justify another $65k 4wd as I head into retirement in a couple of years. No probs justifying the Perentie, especially one that's mechanically (according to KLR) in as good as nick as this one, drive a Corolla during the day and get to have fun with this on the weekends plus its the workhorse on my small acreage. Only major mod I lashed out on was power steering and even then I tried living without that but age has got me :(:( and that certainly wasn't $3k as you quoted.
So bag for buck, winch, Izuzu engine, for towing, 4wd capability, highway cruising at 100kph (actually she hums along at 110kph without any effort), and importantly fun, she does for my needs, and yes as you point out I may be one of those heavily blinkered people .. but I am happy with my Perentie and its cost, so will continue to live in my fantasy world ;);)

there are some blinkered view points around.
I guess there are some blinkered view points - those are some pretty unnecessary things for me - Power steering? NVH? its a 25yo ex-mil vehicle, people arent buying them expecting luxury. They have been fine for 25 years without those things.. And theres enough 'blinkered view pointed people' who seem to be dictating a strong enough market demand for these :p
2nd hand county - Find one thats log book maintained, hasnt been modified with who-knows-what by all its 15 civvie owners over the years and has as low km .. oh dang, there goes the price - flying past :)
2nd hand perentie - Most come with full logbooks, meticulously maintained, cleaned after every use, gal chassis so little rust to worry about - only bulkhead/doors. Simple donk/running gear, less to go wrong with no hydraulic steering, a/c seals drying out, roof can come off in 15m, roof can go back on in .. yeh the roof can go back on lets leave it at that :D. Security? It has its looks for that  But keyed ignition/doorlocks are a $30 part, and when you are outlaying $5k+ on one of these, $30 is nothing. Sure it has a unique paintjob but what county/older defender doesnt have entirely faded decals?
performance wise, it leaves my series in the dust, i mean its slow compared to my last non-land rover based cars, but feels like a rocketship compared to series, and has the discs to slow it down
If you havnt guessed, I have a perentie, and its my daily. Mods so far;
keys $30
led interior lighting
usb mp3 50w stereo with amp/12" sub $50 2nd hand
centre console $who knows, like $30 in raw materials, $50 in w/p switch panel / cig lighter
cupholders for console $3
headlights/led other lights $150
milk crate $on loan
wanted luxuries not yet purchased;
new canopy, being one of the cheaper ones released mines really old, and I knew I was going to need to spend $1650 on a canopy and i was ok with that
a set of 2nd hand off-road tyres maybe?
happy as with my purchase, saving for another one perhaps..

Whilst we were on Magnetic Island recently we did a "Military" Tour of Townsville & drove by Lavarack Barracks where I saw heaps of Landrovers parked (never seen so many in the one place!), so there'd still be plenty to come up for sale eventually I suppose.

I love everything about my truck, I did outlay $$ for power steering, it will do for me for years.
Only disappointment is the crappy towing capacity, I would settle for 2t, oh well, and can't really justify the $$ to get an engineer to do this for me.

I'm very happy with mine and the price I paid.
Mod wise, I dont have a lot planned but have done the following:
fitted power steering - cant recommend this highly enough -appx $900 net after sale of my manual box,
fitted headlight relays for switch reliability and better output -appx $50
fitted a keyed ignition switch - $15. Didn't need door locks for RWC and cant really see the point anyway
I regularly get tempted to fit a turbo, but it mostly gets along well enough, certainly better than my 2A. One day there might be some rear disc brakes and maybe a locker in the picture.
I have owned 2 ex army 2A's and can see some similiarities in terms of comfort and NVH levels, particularly without power steering. But in other respects when compared to a 2A it has:
- better turning circle
-disc brakes on the front
-syncro on all forward gears
-heater and demister that works
-potential to easily install power steering
- better road performance
-much better economy
-better seats
-coil springs
-galvanised chassis
-much stronger rear axle

What did you check before you picked yours?
A mate had already brought one and had paid for a check list , he told me what he checked so we (my youngest son, who is into cars a bit) and I developed our own check list.
Basically 1st pass was looking at the frames and seeing if they were straight, looking for any obvious bingles covered up/rewelded, next was doors and making sure they fitted, otherwise could be bent frames (or bent door).
We marked each one a score and narrowed them down to 4 out of around 16 or so, not counting the wrecks for sale .. then did another level of checks on the 4, checked steering for looseness, clutch and gear box. Fluids for any foreign matter that would indicate a problem. Underneath for any oil leaks. Finally, canvas condition, seat condition, door mechanisms, rims, tyres, anything loose or out of place.
Narrowed it to 2 we preferred but we had 3 on our list, 2xFFR and a GS. Then onto the log books, and spent a lot of time reading the service records. Narrowed to 2 vehicles, then back to them to do a last check over. Sat in both, one was just that bit better and it just felt right.
I only needed to bid on my first choice, it was the highest priced 4x4 on the day, still sub $9k, my 2nd choice was the 2nd highest so obviously I wasn't the only one who had done the hard yards working through the offerings.
Why did I chose it, well low miles since rebuild (14k), everything was pretty tight on it, had been overseas and flat packed back so had been cleaned and reassembled and left stored for a while. Had a new winch cable as a bonus, log booked indicated it had been well maintained, no signs of rust, canvas is in good nick. Was missing a spare wheel and jack, but lift mechanism worked.
It was still crossed fingers and toes when I picked it up, but she seemed good, steering was very heavy with those Goodyears. So off to KLR for a full check out, a couple of small things to be fixed and the fitting of Power Steering, and a key lock for ignition and the 2 doors. KLR suggested swapping the 2 Trailers Bridgestones onto her and even opened up on a Saturday to help do it on the hoist (much appreciated, I did buy another set of wheels from them as well). Now she just purrs along the M7, and is fun to drive. Only ongoing issue is the blinkers are slightly on the blinkers :p, globe has gone behind the speedo, passenger side window rattles which I have put a temporary fix on. She has done some winch work pulling electrical cables on one of my sons industrial sites so we know the winch is working A1. Brought a telescopic jack from a wholesaler and slung the spare wheel under her.

mmm .. I have heard this a lot so must be true. Am fence sitting as its quite an investment to outlay.
Once she is wound up she floats along nicely, sure having that extra for hills, and accelerating, but for me at this stage that is luxury to have. If I had a real performance problem on trips then that would be different, but so far i haven't.
KLR guys say it only takes a short drive outside their driveway, actually the little hill to the left and everyone who has test driven one is sold :o:o I am sure if I end up driving one :cool: it will become a priority. My youngest also keeps at me to get it done

That is what it cost me for my setup. No reason you cannot source all the bits yourself then do the fitting in a weekend.
That price includes $500 for the exhaust.
EDIT - approximate breakdown of prices:
Mandrel Bent 3" Exhaust $500
Manifold ~$300
Turbo (S/H) ~$300
Oil feed line and T (Pirtek) etc... ~$150
Various silicon hoses and tubing/bends/connectors ~$100
Auber EGT ~$100
And another $50 for misc. components such as bolts.
Note that I was generously supplied with a few laser cut flanges for free...
