Hi All,
Are these VSR doing the same job as a "Dual Battery Isolator Kit"? Is it the "poor mans dual battery system" as someone has said.

I think the one in my vehicle has died - as the second battery is flat and not re-charging. So l am looking at replacing it, but not sure if to got for a flashy "kit" (http://www.projecta.com.au/Products/PowerManagement/DualBatteryKits.aspx) or just buy another Volt Sensitive Relay?

I'd appreciate any advice.......

Thanks,
Michael

Those dual battery isolators still have a relay the difference is what opens and closes it a VSR is a lot simpler the isolator uses a small pcb to control it the pcb may be more accurate as far as what voltages turn it on or off but thats about all. The page you have linked to has both VSR and electronic what the price difference? other wise they both do the same job:)

Hi Michael and I make dual battery isolators and systems.

What do you use or want to use a DBS for?

And what vehicle is it in?

Hi
Thanks for the replies.
It is our farm ute (GU Patrol). We run winch, fridge and aux lighting.

Thanks

Mike. Get your self one on these. They are reasonably priced. My self and many others on this forum swear by them.

Hi again Michael, Alternator size and operating voltage is good on the GU.

But how often do you drive the ute and when you do drive, how long do you drive it?

If it’s low on either or both of the above, then you might need additional charging such as a battery charger or a solar panel.

Hi
It is driven daily, but only 20kms on average. Bit longer on weekends.

Is this helpful?

The second battery is still not re-charged?

Hi Michael, do you have a digital multi meter?

If so before starting your motor in the morning, measure and note the voltage of both batteries.

Then after starting your motor and let it idle for a minute or two, then again measure and note the voltage of both batteries.

Then once you have been for a drive, with the motor still running, again measure and note the voltage of both batteries.

The first measurement will give you a rough idea of the state of charger of the two batteries and it doesn’t matter if each battery has a different voltage reading.

The second and third measurements, the voltage should be the same, it it is not, then there is a good chance your isolator is not working.

Here is a chart to give you an idea of the state of charge of each battery, but note, this chart is only valid ( accurate ) at the first measurement, before you start your motor.
