View Full Version : New Bilsteins are great in the ute

Put new heavy duty bilsteins in the front before i went to Darwin and was impressed. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif Replaced back ones today with the same and it feels like a different vehicle. The body roll is allmost non-existant, but it is top heavy with steel canopy and it doesn't crash as much though the railway crossing down the road from home. Just wish i had the back ones in when we went through Birdville as it was fairly rough. I would recommend them to anyone. I also have a bit more bump stop clearance front and back.

After asking some of the guys from the LROC, they also recommended bilsteins, going as far as saying they are the only shocks worth using in Land Rovers. Sounds like they might be onto something. Matt

Have got Bilsteins in the front of my Rangie and they are great. Have yet to put some in the back yet. Put some Monroe gas one in the back of my 77 rangie in 98 and they lasted about 6 months of very easy work.

I am tossing up between a full 2in lift kit from OME, or a set of 2in lift springs from British 4wd and a set of bilsteins from the local 4wd place, both come to around $1200, but the OME price includes fitting. matt

I'm not overly fussed with my bilstiens.

Am considering going back to rancho's.

rancho are a cheap shock in the USA, they are a cheap shock sold at a high price in Aust just good marketing.

they have many lyths to choose from but they are not valved to suit anything,
same valving for zook up to RR, Toy ect and the adjustment is no where enough to compensate between both.

crap is crap.

When i ordered the shockies for the ute Bilstiens make 2 different shockies for a defender. With all the weight i carry in the ute i ordered the heavy duty one. Have never had any thing to do with Rancho's :?: I have a 82 model V8 commodore in the shed that has bilstiens in it that have done over 400,000 k's. Lasted longer than the 4.2L in it!!!!

Just put bilstiens in the disco (thanks Michael), they're fantastic. Though the shocks I had in before were the osiginal L/R ones, virtually nonexistent. I'd definately recomend them.

I have bilsteins on my Defender installed by previous owner. Done about 100K including 3 trips up north. One rear shocky has just gone which is a bit disappointing. A mate has a 110 trayback which he uses for low altitude aero-mustering on his farm; it still has the original standard shocks on his after about 120K.

I will replace with bilsteins mainly because the previous owner said they transformed the handling and because of so many recommendations here. But bit disappointed nonetheless.

Have you checked out the possibility of getting it reconditioned? Someone else here will be able to confirm, but I think both Bil/Koni can be reconditioned.

Hi Noddy

Have not checked anything much as I'm going to persevere with the dud one until I get set up for the next northern trip in July.

If one shockie is crook do you recondition it and leave the other one alone or do you recondition both?

I have thought about re-conditioning (from advice here) but my mechanic reckons I'll save $100 but lose the car for the days while the shocks go east (I'm in Perth) get done and then come back. It sort of makes sense but I am going to do proper research before I commit the money.

Actually now I think of it since I can walk to work is there a big problem in losing use of car if it is going to save me money? $100 is nigh on 1000kms of diesel.
