I've been in Hospital getting my ear drum fixed and grommets fitted after a severe ear infection thanks to my friend Ross River,I bought LRO to read and they had a short article about the trouble they are having with the defender, they have found that they have been supplied cheap non standard bearings, the genuine bearings are from France but after having damaged Transfer case's stripped they found the bearings were Chinese,we have had members on here have major failures, one member has had two T/C failures,I hope LR are doing a thorough investigation on this,it's not acceptable. There is no excuse , for using poor quality bearings , SKF, and Tim-kin are made in the uk . I would have thought that the French bearings would be to a high quality as well . When Land Rover charge premium prices , people expect premium products !!..:(:(

I hope they recall them and fix it rather than wait for me to be broken down in the middle of the desert.

I hope so also, though if you do break down, considering they are aware of the issue, you have the legal right to fair and reasonable compensation (beyond the tow and rectification of the issue).

SKF AB (Sweden), the world's largest bearing company, announced it has formally opened its new factory in Shanghai, China. This is SKF's fifth Chinese production facility.

The facility, SKF Shanghai Bearings Co. Ltd., is a joint venture between SKF (60% ownership) and Shanghai Bearing Group Co. Ltd. (40% ownership). SKF will have full management responsibility.

eBearing reported on the new business being formed back in July 2001, although the business was not formally established until 2002. edit: and Timken too:

Hi, is there a link to an article talking about this or can you point me at the magazine you are referring to. I would be interested to find out more, and possibly raise it with my dealer.
cheers
