Holden will sack 300 vehicle engineers-which is half its engineering workforce by the end of this year, three years ahead of the factory closures.Engineering work on an updated version of the Holden Commodore is almost complete and the services of at least half the test team staff will no longer be required.

The remaining engineers will stay on for another 12 months to prepare one final update before the Commodore reaches the end of the line in late 2017.The engineers are based at Holden's test track at Lang Lang.

I know the government and the car makers both made mistakes, but it angers me that we are losing these type of skilled people.

I believe separation packages were available. Still not good for Australia. The options are move to USA where several autos are hiring, or go to China and cash in teaching them how to become what we were.

It is still a brain drain and we lose the potential for industrial development when the expertise goes offshore.
