View Full Version : Rebuilding the RR - new motor and gearbox

Well after much consideration I'm going to finally bite the bullet and upgrade the mechanicals on the RR.
Current specs are a bog standard MY 1987 RR 3.5 EFI (Flapper type) / ZF auto with a noisy LT230.
I AM still building the D100, but as I still want to enjoy weekends away and tow my boat I am going to upgrade the motor and gearbox in one hit.
I've located a 1996 Disco with a 3.9 EFI (Hotwire) / ZF auto that has been in an accident (rolled while on the road) with about 200km on her.
It goes in next week for the changeover - this will include the late model 3.9 (serpentine belt / intermediate timing cover) / ZF auto / my LT230 (later getting rebuilt) AND all the injection equipment - don't worry the ECu will also be relocated to up high in the dash style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
I was going to do the conversion myself, but time does not permit - also gives me less time for playing and D100 building.
I'm hoping that this upgrade will give me a more reliable vehicle to be able to go greater distances without my ball of string (tow rope) and again less time fixing the RR gives me more time to complete the D100.
I hope to have all the bugs worked out in time for Ace's BBQ II and then get the LPG connected for my trip down to the VIC 4WD show on 20.02.2005
It has been suggested that I should spend the money on pushing the D100 project on quicker, but this is a labour of love and should not be rushed. The RR will be chopped down to a 2 door trayback ute once the D100 is on the road.
So here is keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

and hoping that doing it one hit would reduce the monthly on going costs.
I did look at selling it and get a newer RR - but prob will only end up buying someone elses problems.

think it was 1994 - when they did the intermediate timing cover, this is a cam driven dizzy but crank driven oil pump.

Vlad -- how is the Falcon going? Any more joy convincing Mrs Vlad of the merits of 2-door Rangie? Do you need some help? Put her on the forum (like Mrs Redback style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif )

Nah, she's thinking about a Disco but she says she doesn't like the look of the Rangies. Mind you she liked the inside of adm333's one but it's a bit $teep for us. I have to convince her to test drive one. But she'd never get a 2 door - she likes 4 doors and in case, um, in case, well put it this way -
Ace - you bastard :!:

A good quality second hand early 90's disco isnt out of the question. When i was looking for mine, there was one on ebay for 14K, was a 92 model but had only done 145000km, it looked like new in the photos. Matt

Hi Vlad
Buy her a 4 door V8 Disco.
Just watch the power go to her head when she blows DORIS into the weeds(seaweed????) on the beach.
Then VLAD gets his revenge and DORIS has to rescue the Disco on the next "serious offroad" adventure.
HAPPY FAMILYS
AND
4 Doors
FOR
FUTURE HAPPY FAMILYS
