Hey Guys this morning I test drove this to see what they were like:D

Discounted Used 1989 Land Rover 110 (4WD) Green 4 Speed Manual Wagon - Cousins Motor Company, Oxley (http://www.cousins.com.au/used_4x4_dealer/view/cousins_used_4x4_dealer/1989_Land_Rover_110_4WD_Green_4_Speed_Manual_Wagon/6338642/)

My god it's like a truck compared to my current 4wd[Suzuki Sierra]

Battery was flat, then transfer would not engage high range[ was in neutral;)]

The driving position was great, very commanding, you sit nice and high, seats were ok..not uncomfortable at all, certainly better than my Dad's old series 3 109 seats:p

Shifting gears is not exactly easy[ like my sierra or a Toyota Corolla!:p]
The gears are very notchy and heavy[ I Missed gears a few times:rolleyes:]
Not to mention that the clutch is dam heavy:o..brakes were pretty average too

The steering was a bit heavy at parking speeds, but no where near as heavy as I expected it to be..and it was fine once moving:)

The ride was not bad at all thanks to coils..quite good..but the interior was LOUD as! and the whole car feels extremely solid felt like a tank:p, quite a few vibrations too.

The Isuzu motor..felt very slow[ my sierra 1.3 felt quick in comparison:lol2:]
But once moving it gets along fine..as long as your not in a hurry!
Reving the motor hard did't seem to make progress any quicker..
So long as each gear was in the torque band it was good:)

Would I buy one? HELL YES!

The 6x6 is even better...:)

The LT95 box is fine once you get used to it - it is actually a small truck gearbox, so very strong.

I think a turbo on the 4x4 would make it a great vehicle. Not sure about that one being discounted - you'd be better off getting from the auctions and save yourself a few more dollars.

I drove one yesterday too. And today  awesome vehicle. After 800km I was used to it.

So you got yourself a "P" rentie :D from the Sydney Auction ? which one ?

Awsome toy, now all you need to do is teach the management how to drive it,just the thing for coast traffic :D;)

G'day 4x4 MORE :)

Have Cousins just got a load in? if so they are ex-Sydney (Minto) auction which ended last Wednesday, I have a list of the vehicles, and if the one you drove had either 93,000 or 97,000 and mis-matched front seats and was a 3/1991 vehicle I can give you it's ARN :) as I was watching that auction for somebody.

I suspect it's the FFR they've had for ages and they want to shift it. Pretty sure it's one I checked out months ago, (though I didn't drive it) it had a flat battery then as well. I got mildly excited when the heading on the link said wagon.

I did't know they had a small truck gearbox..

Yeah I recon I would get used to it after a while

I would't turbo the Isuzu for simplicity, less to go wrong..

Yeah I would never buy a car from a car yard..way too expensive

Ben at cousin's reckoned that one cost them 19 grand!

UncleHo, no mate they just have 2 Ex army Land Rover Perentie's..

that FFR I drove and a 6x6..MAN THAT thing was HUGE!

2stroke, Yeah that's the same one mate..they are closing down soon apparently

It did't have a drop down tail gate, only had a half fixed tail gate..could be pain for touring:angel:

Low range seemed good..certainly lower than the zook..

What's the low range ratio for the Perentie's?

The 6x6's have a turbo as standard, and it is very simple. No intercoolers or anything, just straight out of the turbo, across the rocker cover and into the inlet manifold. The 4BD1 engine is plenty strong enough for the turbo without modifications or worrying about reliability. :)

The 4BD1 Izuzu came originally from the 4 to 8 ton truck range, so is pretty well understressed, and unless one drives it without oil or water unbreakable, a lot of testing went into them to make them "grunt proof" :)

G'day 4x4 MORE :)

I suspect that Cousins have bought a few of the Minto ones from last Wednesday,so they would be getting rid of old stock, most of the 4x4's went for between 8.5K and 10K with the RFSVs going for 2-2.5K higher, was watching that auction closely on behalf of a friend.also I have a friend here in SE Qld that has his Perentie on the market for about 12K just had a major service and check over, I have driven this vehicle and it's nice :) if I could afford it I would have it :(
It has had no beach work.

cheers

Is the 4 speed lower geared than the 5 speed?

The box itself in 4th is 1:1, it's in the transfer case where it is lower geared. There are a lot of different ratios available, but not sure what the Perentie had in it.

Most have .996:1, the RFSVs are lower (same as early range rover).

there is a guide on buying the ex army 110's done by a guy on here.

Find it here (http://buymilitaryvehicles.com/collections/perentie-ex-military-land-rover-buyers-guide/products/buyers-guide-to-ex-military-land-rovers)

yes it is $47.50 but i'm led to believe it gives you all the information you need to know to make sure you get a good one and not a dud. I can only speculate as I haven't bought a copy myself, I don't think my circumstances will allow me to have one :(, but if those circumstances change I will be buying one of these guides before I bid on anything as you can't test drive the one at the actions, in fact you can't even start them in some cases.

That is if you plan on buying one from the auctions. You will get a much better deal at the actions anyway.

cheers
Ben
