View Full Version : Another blown cv joint

I've done it again! W4 Challenge weekend and I've blown the front left cv joint! Not as serious as last year as I was still able to drive home. So now about to jump on the usual sites searching for a replacement.
Has anyone else broken front left cv joints? I'm starting to think they are a very weak link in the drive train.

I broke my front left CV first trip with 32's. Was going pretty hard and it made a very loud bang! Limped the poor girl home.
Can't remember where but sourced a genuine 2nd hand one and it's been fine since.

I should have brought one back with me from the UK, will do next trip in May.
I had to replace my left cvj a few years back as I split the boot and was running around with it full of sand for an unknown length of time. Got mine posted from the UK for $100 ish. It never gave up though, just got noisy on lock
How did you go on the W4challenge, did you better my 5th place?
cant believe you managed to destroy your drive train, you need to control that loud peddle next time, low 1st and chug round

The frustrating (to put it mildly) part of the equation is that I was going slow in 1st gear and below 2000 RPM! Below is a picture from 2013 followed by the 2014 effort......remarkable similarity where the shaft broke and destroyed the CV.

No chance of beating the 5th position Wayne. This was done on the 1st stage

Howdy Neighbour,
I also did the front CV on my D2, but not as badly as yours. Mine is still intact, keeping the grease on the inside:p, but making horrible noises on full lock.
I also broke an engine mount.:wasntme:

That's broken in the same spot too hasn't it?
Your vc didn't explode though did it:p

I don't like threads like this!!!! I've been out 2 or 3 times and my friend broke his playdo (prado) cv and I've always been sitting there fairly confident mine shouldn't do the same (notice the words fairly and shouldn't)

Exactly the same spot. It looks like the shaft has destroyed the cv joint rather than the other way around. So my assumption based on two broken shafts is that the shaft is the weak point in the driveline.
