G'day All,

I was thinking of this subject when I met up with Maggot the other night to watch my "A 4x4 is born" DVD at his place.

I am starting to build my collection of LR / 4WD DVD's and I was wondering if anyone had any they would recommend? I have some older ones on VHS but done use VHS anymore.

Currently only have:

1. A 4x4 is born - Discovery Channel show that builds a LR Hybrid using a RR chassis - rating 10/10.

2. 4WD Monthlys Discover Tassie - freebie, not bad - but NO LR's

3. Bush Tucker Man, 8 Classic Stories of Survival - Xmas present, not watched yet.

So what do you have?

I don't have any, but I want, the Camel Trophy: the lanrdover years, and any of the specific years DVD's. I must order that from pitstop 8)

Camel Tropy the Landrover Years is not bad. However not alot about the Defender. The Discovery and Freelander soft roaders feature in most of the footage. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Agree with Tyrepower .. the DVD covers a 10 year history about Land Rover's involvement in the Camel Trophy. It features only one year when the Defender was used as a competition vehicle .. although they were used as support vehicles in almost all the trophy events. If you like the Discovery ... it's a great DVD, shows just how capable they really are. Also features a few rollovers and some serious water crossings 8O

LRH you've been to my place .. if you in the area give me a shout, you are welcome to borrow it. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

The individual shows that cover one Camel event are better, I had a few on Video that I got Inc to copy across to DVD for me. (Champ!).

I have the 4wd Monthly Cape York one - good scenery, but basically just an ad for Nissan and ARB.

Have yet to see the 4x4 is born one (anyone scam me a copy?) but I'm sure someone here (Redbak perhaps) said the actual vehicle was a p.o.s. handling wise when finished. ?

I have no Bush Tucker Man stuff but if ANYONE has any going (and a DVD burner to hand) I'm always interested. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

A little bit different but I always wanted a copy of OziExplorer.

And the borneo & camel trophy dvd's.

I have all the 4x4 monthly one's, some US rock Crawling, out back challenge and a few other bits and pieces.

I have a video of an ARC comp from the UK which I picked up at Billing a few years ago. They were selling them off cheap and had them spaning several years but I only bought one which I have regretted ever since.

It is truly excellent, shows everything from stock vehicles to lightweight V8 hybrids to concourse vehicles having fun in the mud, all with that wonderful English understatement.

LRH- does the "A 4x4 Is Born" dvd have the whole project from start to finish or is it in sets? How many discs are in it? And where did you get it? I have been watching it on pay for the last couple of months and last saturday they went back to the start, i dont know if they showed it and i missed it but i didnt get to see the finished vehicle. How long does the DVD go for, and where did you get it?

Vlad- I agree with the Cape York 4wd Monthly DVD i got a free copy for subscribing the 1st time. All they do is carry on about ARB and Nissan, you certainly got that right. Another thing which annoyed me was the total over emphasis on beer. Now dont get me wrong there is nothing wrong with beer whilst camping but i think they portrayed a poor image to younger viewers as they jumped at the chance to drink, day or night. Not really good when Drink Driving is classed as illegal.

The Cape York one is the only one i have. I know alot of the comp videos are quite good i have seen snippets of them whilst in the local 4wd centre. They arent cheap though, they are highly over priced compared to other DVD's. Matt

Its 2 discs - disc1 is 2hrs + additional materials disc2 is 2 hrs

I bought it from Discovery Channel Europe - got is sent the day it was released just before Christmas.

there are some Disco owners that would consider the plural "soft roaders"
to be incorrect.

well ok then...who has dvd burners....im interested in purchasing copies off you guys at around 10 to 15 bucks a pop.

this should make it worthwhile as it reduces your original purchase price style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

i can get some copied as my sister has a burner but that takes time as i gotta find time to go over and drop off/pick up discs.......but can be done.

a single disc is easy and cost effective to mail out.....covers can be scanned and emailed.

will this work?
or can uncle inc work out some way of selling copies through the emporium legally as is happenning with the rave discs?

dont all jump......im only asking to find out.
if i was to buy a disc at $40 or more that someone else wanted i would be more than happy to make a copy for around $10 which reduces my cost of purchase so i can buy more discs. its not for profit as such.
if its a disc where say ten people want a copy the price can be reduced to say $5 which is enough to cover costs and initial purchase price.

opinions please.......also some opinions on legalities.

They dont get caught. The laws are different in other countries, ours are some of the most strict in terms of copyright. We actually had to ring all the publishers of the PC games in the shop, before we could rent them, and renting PC games in the US is illegal ful stop. Its the asian countries selling cheap knockoffs which is the problem. Not having a go at you or anything, just saying be very careful. There was a guy who just had his house raided. He had a computer set up in his house which was able to copy 21 DVD's at a time. Matt

That's about right. While you'll get away with brining a few copied DVD's back from your SE Asian holiday (as long as they are purely for your own use) to do so for commercial purposes will, in legal terms, get you "in the ****".

We've had people come through the airport with large volumes of recorded discs, with DVD burners and other indications of commercial activity - and quite often the AFP (the feds, that is) take it from there.

Not that long ago, there was also the first sentence of imprisonment in Australia, for copyright infringement (this guy was doing it BIG time):

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>2 June 2004

Brisbane man sentenced over fake DVD imports
The sentencing of a Brisbane man to nine months' imprisonment on charges relating to counterfeit Digital Versatile Discs (DVD) was the first sentencing of an Australian to a jail term for offences under the Copyright Act, the Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator Chris Ellison, said today.

Sydney Grant Priscott, 53, was sentenced today in the Brisbane Magistrates Court to nine months imprisonment (with three months to serve), a recognisance of $1500 and five years conditional good behaviour after being found guilty of 28 charges relating to importing, possessing and exposing for sale counterfeit DVDs.

The investigation started on 23 September 2003 when Brisbane Customs officers at air cargo detected approximately 800 counterfeit DVDs concealed in a shipment of audio speaker stands.

The shipment of DVDs had been sent from Malaysia to an address in the Brisbane suburb of Salisbury. Investigations by Customs and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) revealed this address was false.

On 6 October 2003, federal agents and Customs executed a search warrant at an address in Coopers Plains. During the course of the search further DVDs were located.

At the completion of the search a 53 year-old man was arrested and charged with offences under the provisions of the Copyright Act. He was subsequently bailed from the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

After his court appearance witnesses advised police that the man was continuing to sell DVDs at the Eumundi Pavilion Markets.

A search warrant was executed at a stall at the Eumundi Pavilion Markets on 6 March 2004 where further counterfeit DVDs were seized. On 9 March 2004 the same man was arrested in connection to this seizure of DVDs.

"The sentence handed down by the court today is the first time that an Australian has received a prison term for offences against the Copyright Act.," Senator Ellison said.

"This sends a clear message that attempts to flout Australia's copyright laws will be detected and punished.

"I congratulate the Customs and AFP officers involved in this case for their diligence and hard work in uncovering these offences and assisting in this landmark case."[/b][/quote]

I don't know what the legal position is on making "backup" copies of your own DVD's or of storing these back-ups "off site"...

... but certainly selling them would clearly infringe copyright laws, and potentially land you in more trouble than you need.

From the story quoted above you could draw your own conclusions regrading scale of offence vs likelihood of detection vs consequences.

Have you seen the one where Clarkson is getting chased through a forest by a tank and he’s in a landy?

Or the one where he drives the new landy to the top of that mountain in Scotland, according to the video clip no vehicle had EVER climbed that mountain.?

If you haven’t use Google video for “land rover” “ Scottish mountain” you‘ll find it.

A mate of mine from the UK told me that after they shot the episode where Clarkson drives the landy up the mountain he got a helicopter flight back down and a flight back down south to London; but apparently he had the landy keys in his pocket so they had to leave the landy on top of this mountain overnight till the keys were express couriered back to Scotland.
(It’s a secondhand story but I thought it was a good one).

Oh by the way copying DVD’s for ANY purpose even 'backups' is illegal unless it explicitly states on the DVD that copying is allowed, (it never does).

2006 Ateco is the same!

I would recommend getting the Ateco 2006 just to see Glens Drive of the Rock wall in his Black Landy.
Man that is some great footage!

The answer is simple its illegal, its illegal to copy music, movies, books etc wihtout paying copyright royalties to the owner of the material, you are stealing by copying them.

Fines in Australia are hefty and yes they do track you down and take legal action, but its targetted tracking so one off copying would probably never get caught. Music download streams are being targetted at moment and lot if universities are worried as students used their networks to download millions of dollars of music and swapped/shared filed the music and the owner of the system can be fined as well as the user.

Reason asians don't get fined is simple law enforcement doesn't chase them up in their countries, Chinese have signed up to Copyright and anti piracy treaties but don't enforce them till the USA bitches and moans and then they have the show smashing of pirated cd's by rolling over them with a steam roller or crushing them some other dramatic way.
