the 40 series looks like land rovers cousin.

And like almost everyone else, I'd like an OKA now anyway.

Unimog for me thanks style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif .. lots of blokes in South-Africa spend big money restoring them ... you will also see at least one at the popular quaries to rescue the over enthusiastic. I like the concept of portal axles .. not that you need the additional clearance in a mog.

It would have to be a Jeep, or a GQ Patrol 4.2 Diesel, I dont like the Jap crap, but would choose a Patrol over a Cruiser anyday. Matt

My pick would have to be one of these, I did have my eye on one but change my mind to the rangie cause its easier to park and the local cops wouldn't freak out as much.

Unimogs, Pinzgauers (yummy), OKA's are all good but only as playthings or tourers not as an everyday vehicle.
The GQ Patrol is about as solid and dependable as any Japper has ever been. So, realistically, it might be one of those. (Shuddup Medic)
The old 40-series cruisers are great but that's coz they are (poor) imitations of Land Rovers -- just check out those flat sides, rear quarter windows etc etc.
To be different, I wouldn't mind one of those original (50 series ? - whatever they were called) LandCruiser station wagons. (Toyotas **** poor answer to the Rangie). But I'd drop in some portal axles.....

Sorry to say,you guys who picked the OKA would be quite upset with its performance on the dirt to what the paper states.
A mate had one of these from new, thought it would be unstoppable,it had twin difflocks.
The huge problem is its weight,it just digs in and bogs itself.I also have a mate who did an outback trip in an OKA "coach",their trip was cut short by 4 days because the OKA was bogged so much.
If it wasnt for LANDROVER I would want a a a a a .
Im not sure,MITSA****TY, been there got that NO , TOJO,NO,owned one and had one as a farm ute.****AN GU sorry no,we also had one of them on the farm,VERY OVER RATED.JEEP? never been near one so dont know.Always wanted an effie, but on the beach and everywhere else my chevy powered Tojo shorty wasted the 2 4WD effies my mates owned, also later had an effie (4.1 2WD) as a farm ute, what a chunk of pooooo.
All in all if nothing else was available,I think I could have my arm twisted enough to look at one of those new F250 turbodiesel.
At the moment I would like to FIND a bit of money to spend on a MODERN Defender style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Vlad -- not so sure about it being a copy of the Fender.
The G-wagen was originally built, not by Mercedes Benz, but Steyr Puch (builders of the Haflinger and Pinzgauer) in Graz, Austria. While it was built in response to the SIII success in the military markets, much of its underpinnings date back to before WWII.
To say that it was a copy of the Defender might be pushing it a tad. With three diff locks as standard, I suspect it will comprehensively out perform a standard SIII or 'Fender' off-road.
I love my LRs, but if money was no object (and you could actually buy them in RHD), I would go for a g-wagen over the Fender.

Don't let facts get in the way of a good story. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
I'd just add 2 diff locks to a 'fender.
