So I've been oogling over old land rovers for several years now, and while on the search to finally acquire one, this one kind of just fell into my lap.
1975 Land Rover 101 fc General Service
Complete with factory PTO nokken winch (EDIT: apparently the winch wasn't fitted from the factory), aftermarket overdrive, and a rather odd custom aluminum hard top and brush bar. Though I plan to keep the hard top for the coming winter, I do have the original canvas top for when everything finally thaws. 84443

Current things I've done, I pulled her out of a field in Connecticut. It hadn't run in about 3 or 4 years but it wasn't seized. So I set into figuring out the nightmarish nest of english wiring (no offense to any British engineers, cool truck but meh electrical)
After spending way to long with a voltage meter I decided to scrap the whole "luminition" system for something updated and went with a buick HEI distributor. One wire and done lol.
With the turn of a key, the motor turned right over and started right up. I was pleasantly surprised.
Also bought a set of michelin XML 325/85r16 to go on very shortly.
Replaced the crappy plastic half-disintegrated break and clutch reservoirs with aftermarket "bean tins" from pegasus parts
Still haven't found a fuse panel if any
Still need to fix a tie rod end and a small bit of frame on the rear cross member
I really hope to get her on the road by Christmas...
(Fingers crossed)
Also looking for diff lock options. I know I can get a Detroit from gbr. But I'd also like to do something with the front end as well so I can play with all my buddies who have jeeps and land-cruisers :p

Some Brit 101s did have the Nokken winch fitted as original equipment but also some owners may have fitted it later but it would have still been an original 101 item.
Your vehicle is a RHD version so the fuse box is in the cabin just above the the drivers side of the tunnel right up on the nose cone. Put your left hand on the hand brake lever then move your hand to the right to the side of the top of the tunnel - follow that edge all the way forward under the dash until you hit the front of the vehicle (nose cone) just to the left of the top hinge for the clutch pedal. You should find a small black plastic box there about 2.5"x2" and about 1.5" thick - that is the fuse box.
As far as difflocks go - a 101 detroit in the rear if you can find them.
In the front a salsbury ARB air locker - you need to get the side gear broached out to fit the axles BUT the diff is basically the same as the Dana diff and there are a range of side gears for them in the US to suit different purposes - one may fit the 101 axle or at least be easily modified. The other option is to get side gears made which it what some of us here have.
They are a great vehicle and a pleasure to drive.
Cheers

I've heard of modifying. The Dana 60 arb. Here in the states that axle is like snow in a blizzard... Everywhere. But that begs the question though... Where all that is needed to change is the side gears, I wonder if other less expensive options would exist. For example a Dana 60 "OX" or cable locker. (I enjoy the idea of something solid and mechanical over electric or pneumatic) or an eaton e-locker for that matter.

I really cannot help with what you might get in the US as other than comp truck people most here would not know what was available as that sort of gear is not normally available - other than a few diehards modern US pickups are not at all common - maybe a few F100/250s.
You would certainly be more knowledgeable on what might work and what might not.

Welcome to you and 101's.
We have a Detroit in ours, I believe they are VERY thin on the ground (Detroit no longer make them for 101's) so if thinking of buying I would order 1 before they run out :)
BTW I don't think I have heard a 101 called a female name;) Ours is "Hercules"

Welcome along Mike. I'm guessing there can't be too many right-hand drive units in the USA:eek:! Great to see this one pulled out of a graveyard it was settling in to. Thanks for the link to the extra photo's. That was a monster truck it was parked next to before the recovery:eek:! I'm looking forward to following your progress to roadworthiness:cool:.

Beware the female of the species....
Here in the states at least it's typical for cars boats and machines to be presumed female.
But my reasoning, it's neat looking but tough, not afraid to roll up its sleeves and get her hands dirty, and helped support the war effort...
Well... Uh....

Yep, wiring is pretty awful in them. The fuse box only has 4 fuses and is a pain to get to. One of the first jobs I did on mine was to rewire 90% of it - the wiring that runs down to the back lights is still original, but everything else got replaced and I've now got 8 fuses that are easy to get to, all new - and a lot more - relays and everything works every time I need it.:)
Lucas electrics suck and being an Electrician, that's always the first stuff I fix in my Land Rovers. The only one that I haven't had to touch is the L322 - which has BMW electrics. :). The Germans are far better than the Poms at electrics.
Good luck with the build.

And you did a superb job of it too; the memory of your photos is still a pleasant one! :D

My first GS was named Joanne, mostly because of the J's in the reg.
I've also had a 90 called Wendy, and a Series II called Duck (after the great western engine in the railway series stories).
As a general rule the V8's were girls, the diesels male, it's just the personalities they had.
Wendy used to sulk terribly if I stopped using her for a bit and drove one of the others instead.
It would usually mean a week or so of niggling issues when you went back to her again. Couldn't help but love her though.

Is it not because the neighbours think you're mad for building that there and the spiders have moved in two by two?
If that's the case, when it's finished, everyone will be wanting a ride in it.

It was 'Thomas the Tank Engine' over here. Had a fairly complete collection of the original books too.

Wow, bringing me back man. I think there were a few different shows based on the Thomas series. Had some of the original HO-ish sized toys too... I may still have some somewhere! Never had the books though...

Worth getting hold of.
My wee lass loves Thomas and reading the books with me. It's great fun reading them again with her.
