View Full Version : After-market head-units compatible with steering-wheel controls

Hey everyone,

At the Land Rover Expo, I heard someone mention that there were certain Alpine headunits available that were compatible with the steering-wheel controls.

Do you have an after-market head-unit working with the standard controls? What make and model is it, and how did you do it?

Patrick, if yours looks like this pic of mine, then it will have a Clarion radio, not Alpine. I don't know of any radios compatible with the Clarion's steering wheel controls (but am happy to hear otherwise).

Not only that, but interfacing a new head unit to the door amps on that model is (or was) problematical. I have done it by modifying a commercial kit that was supposed to work but didn't. See http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/7-range-rover-mark-ii-p38/35296-head-unit-upgrade-again-3.html

All p38s had the same steering wheel control resistances, so if it works on bosch it'll work on gems etc. Yes some alpine and clarion units are programmable in terms of steering wheel controls, but even the older units (I've got an old eclipse) There are units available that'll act as a patch, but they're pricey.

I've got some after-market rubbish head-unit, so the controls don't currently work.

I'm hoping to find any kind of head-unit that will work with them. I'm not particularly brand-loyal, I just want it all to work nicely.

Interesting.

I might need it. My aftermarket head unit failed whilst I was at Scouse's today. Possibly on refitting of the battery leads.

Looks like there are a few options and some different leads depending upon your model

I hate the way these get embedded now

google "PC99-X14.pdf" to find the pdf

SteveWe didn't get Phillips radios out here with the P38s so I assume this is referring to the Disco or other markets.

According to the text at the bottom of that PDF, we need PC99-X08 for the Clarion cars & PC99-X30 for the Alpines.

IIRC, don't you have some sort of Nexia kit in your car Ron?

Yes. But it didn't work and couldn't possibly have worked. I had to redesign the circuit. The plugs and sockets were useful though.

Hi Ron,
did you replace the battery leads-positive first then negative.

I recently got mine back from the mechanic after it had been off the road for some time, and the radio was showing a tuning error.
After replacing the battery earlier this week, the radio was restored after replacing the leads according to the book and putting the radio code in.

The 2000 P38 HSE I bought 2 weeks ago has an integrated (sort of) JVC KD-R526 head which does talk to the steering wheels controls - and has a non-genuine sat nav. Unfortunately I can't tell you much else about it's setup at the moment but it's been used for about 3-4 years.

In fact, I'm not even interested in having a look at the back of the console as I now have to repair the heater core which broke (not the o-rings, Gundagai) when I drove the car home from Melbourne to Canberra when I bought it.

There must be a message in that, but I did take enough tools to lock out the heater system, bled the cooling lines and drove home, slowly. I'll write more about this later on but I'm a bit busy at the moment.

Yes. Always do it that way.

The radio won't power on. I can refit the original Clarion if needs be.

Hey guys,
I installed a cheap ebay all in one about 3-4 years ago which has SWC that works in my 95 P38!

It has 7" fold out Touchsreen with DVD/GPS/TV/ AM/FM Bluetooth Reverse camera etc.
(Win Ce OS which means it will run Ozi Explorer if you like for offroad mapping.)
I have setup a roof mounted flip down dvd for rear also as well as side cameras which are all connected to this unit, it works great for cost of about $300 delivered to my door! Can't beat that.

Having said that, recenently it decide to start adjusting volume itself but im not sure if thats a P38 issue or the unit, i will disconnect SWC wires to identify culprit. But I dont mind replacing now & costed an equivalent Alpine/Pioneer unit at Autobarn :eek: $2000.00 + depending on how many add on modules you choose - GPS alone +$800.

I could replace this 7 times for that!:o:o:o
Plus this unit takes up less space!

I have been wondering about a unit with a drop down screen like this one

7" Single 1 DIN IN Dash Touch Screen CAR CD DVD Player Stereo Radio Bluetooth TV | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/7-Single-1-Din-In-Dash-Touch-Screen-Car-CD-DVD-Player-Stereo-Radio-Bluetooth-TV-/231155926918?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35d1f78786)

Item #231155926918

No steering wheel controls though.

One the last one I installed the screen came upwards which meant the unit itself had to sit further forward than the original so it could angle right up

I think I'll be going for a flip-up one, and have it sitting out. I'm not real fond of the flip-down offerings available.

Two camera inputs are required, one for forwards, one for reversing. I definitely want TV/DVD/Satnav/bluetooth audio.

There are also small screen single din units appearing now some have video out

I was thinking a 7" tablet could be mounted to the right of the clock and fed from the video out maybe

If you want to watch TV it could be a problem :p

I am pretty sure I have seen them with DTV or at least an add-on gizmo, just more bucks involved

Also neither of these units have steering wheel controls

The one you posted is a definite frontrunner.

If it has to sit out a little further, so be it. Small price to pay for having everything I want.

I made a packer for each side of unit behind blanking plugs drilled to same pattern of plug pins so they can go back on top to finish off sides again!
I think they are about 16-19mm thick which gives just enough clearance for screen to slide out fully + it looks neat.

You can buy DIN radio spacers and Nexxia sells little spacers for each end to make it look a bit neater.

I am currently leaning towards this unit, since I don't need GPS and it has steering wheel controls etc

I nearly dropped into your place after stopping at the George IV at Picton for a drink this arvo.

I got my radio to power up after pulling it out. However, although I can get it to play the iPod and radio, there is no drive to any of the door amps or the sub-woofer. Maybe I disconnected something when it was pulled out.

When I was later looking at the owner's booklet, I found there is a reset button behind the drop down front panel for use when the system stops working. Maybe I only needed to reset it. :(

Well, that'll certainly hide the HEVAC chequebook symbol!

Not only that but it will almost certainly hit the gearstick when in Park :(

So I think I am going to go the small screen full featured one and add either a tablet or a 7" monitor somewhere like the dash or maybe even a dropdown

The Nexus tablet can be set up to use a rev camera but it is limited in other areas

Personally playing DVD's in the car and TV are way down on my list of features :p
