I need new tyres for my 2009 D4 3.0 DTV6 and have read so many general pro's and con's about budget v premium and other aspects of tyres, that I'm feeling groggy.
I drive 95% on bitumen, and 5% on all sorts of quite testing off-road terrain, but I'm not in it for the macho and try to avoid "serious" off-road.
Does the forum have suggestions for good, quiet, safe road tyres which can handle some off-road, please?

What size rims do you have? I suspect 19".

Have a look at Toyo Open Country H/T 255/55/19 111V.
I have fitted them and did a 1000km round trip to Sydney and found them smooth, comfortable and above all very quiet. They also appear to be a very solid tyre.

Supposed to be really good.

... And they are 111V whatever that means. I checked the web address and I can only see Toyo Open Country HT 255/55-19 with 103S (whatever that means:). And they are $510 each at that site. Sounds expensive but I've never replaced these tyres before.
thanks for advice so far.

111 is the load rating, you need a minimum of 109
V is the speed rating

See here (http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/passenger/care/markings.aspx) for more info.

There are a few tyres that are suitable:

Pirelli Scorpion ATR (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/255-55-19-Pirelli-Scorpion-ATR-Brand-new-tyres-all-terrain-landrover-SUV-4WD-/251633831463?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a968b8e27)

I have used links to eBay as they were the easiest to search they may or may not be the cheapest.

As far as I know there are no LT (light truck) tyres in 19".

All of the above have had good reports.

My BMW X5 has 19 X 10's on the rear and 19 X 9's on the front. I buy from Tempe Tyres in Sydney. I get a full set of 285 x 35 x 19 rears and 245 x 45 x 19 fronts (I think the numbers are right) delivered to my door for under $800. They may be what they call "grey imports" but they fulfil all my needs of tyres. They are black, round and keep my rims off the ground. :p
I have been getting 60,000 + from the fronts and about 40,000 from the rears.
I must state the usual disclaimer here that I have no shares in Tempe Tyres nor am I having a relationship with the tyre fitter's daughter. :wasntme:

Personally I quite like the oem wranglers (laughing to a minimum please). Having had Wranglers, GG ATs and Pirelli Scorpions I've gone back to Wranglers (at the right price) and am reasonably happy with them.

Tyres are like Oils I reckon, Everyone's got an opinion.
I've no experience with 4WD tyres, but with reasonably powerful road cars, with which I do have some experience, if I've bought the car new, I normally look at the O.E. tyre, or another "Brand Name".
I've heard nothing but good about Cooper Tyres.

I had cooper HT on my range rover. When they wore down to about 40% we legitimately thought the car was stuffed. Steering was crap, ride was noisy and harsh, couldn't go around a roundabout without activating DSC in the wet (not hoons). We were seriously considering selling the car it was that bad. Put on yoko geolander a/t, they have been Fantastic!!!

2009 D3 SE

Love my new Pirelli Scorpion ATR's. Quiet and good grip on wet or dry pavement or dirt/sand and a WHOLE lot better on soft dirt/light mud than the CrapKumho tyres that were on it....
Not for mud at all but I don't go there much other than paddocks.

Now let's see if they will go the distance....

I'm on my second set of Pirelli scorpion Zeros on the MY08 D3 and reasonably happy with them, they have been on now about 2 1/2 years, not sure how many clicks. Handling was good when new but they are getting to the point of needing replacement soon and the handling reflects that.

I have tried the wranglers, Contis (ughh) and now the Pirelli's. Will most likely go with those again. I do have the old set and 2 of them still have some life so will swap out the rears and get another 6 months.
