Bigger wheel nuts on Series IIA threads

Just like the thread title suggests, I am thinking very seriously about going to the later style wheel nuts, which have a much larger contact area and don't tend to burrow through the hole in the wheel when they're tightened up.

I am loathe to do it, as I would prefer to keep the old wheel nuts and the original look. But I noticed today that one of my wheels at at least one point is getting damaged by the wheel nut.

Does anybody have a part number for a larger wheel nut that will fit the early threads? (my Landy is a '65)

I don't know about that style wheel nut but if u use series 3 hubs they use the bigger nuts. I have seen "double sided" wheel nuts as well that have a taper on both sides. I still have the original 15/16 size nuts on mine but when I fit the disc setup they will b changed to series 3 size.

Yep, that is what mine has as standard - the 15/16 double-tapered nuts. I don't want to change to later hubs, but I do seem to remember seeing something about later-pattern nuts with early-type threads.

Now I think about it... I might actually have some in my parts store: I seem to remember ordering some by accident once. I'll have to check the threads.

Pretty funny if I end up being the one to come up with the answer to my own thread question. I must be tired...

Just be aware that there seems to be two different wheel stud diameters. The early series vehicles have a smaller diameter than the Defender and Series 111. I may be wrong but this just seems to be what I have found with the collection of hubs I seem to have acquired.

I think you are looking for suffix G wheel nuts. 9/16 BSF thread, with I think 27mm hex.

The early ones are 9/16 BSF, (15/16 hex) while the very last 2As, 3s and Defenders are 16mm x 1.5mm with a 27mm hex.

I remember my first 2A came with two different hex sizes, some with the double taper ends some without, but it was a mish-mash of bits.

As noted, the Series 2a changed in the last few months of production to 27mm AF nuts (single sided) on the same 9/16" BSF studs.

However, I would comment that in over fifty years of driving Series Landrovers with the original nuts, I have never known of them to burrow into the wheels unless run with loose wheel nuts. It is simply a problem I have never heard of, and I suggest that the larger nuts will not solve the problem, whatever it is. If it is a wheel that has been run loose in the past, the only real fix is to replace the wheel.

It is also quite possible to replace the studs with drive in Series 3 studs by drilling out the holes, but this represents a fair bit of work by the time you do all four hubs, and becomes a bit pricey by the time you buy all the studs, nuts, and almost certainly new hub seals, gaskets, bearing lock washers, etc.

I bought a set of the nuts you are looking for when I fitted d1 rims. However later decided that the stronger s3 studs were a good idea, so changed to s3 hubs.

I think I paid $1.50 each for the nuts s/h, and sold them for the same.
