The SIII gearbox (still in a SIII 109" )that is destined for my wife's 88" SII has a PTO winch attached. I suspect that a PTO winch will be completely useless to her but that an overdrive would see far more use, so the PTO will come off.

From what I have read, removal of the PTO is straightforward and just requires the refitting of the rear and top plates to the transfer box. I realise that these plates will be removed again when the overdrive goes in, but for now I need it working in standard form.

Assuming that all I need to do is replace the cover plates (please correct me if I'm wrong), are the SIII parts the same as earlier models? Can I use the parts from the SII transfer box or do I need to source SIII ones? As it looks like the same PTO's and overdrives fit most models, I'm guessing that the plates are the same too, but I'd like to know for certain!

The intermediate shaft in the T/C changes, but as far as I know the bits you are talking about are either identical or interchangeable.

Just make sure the needle roller and the circlip is still inside the cover plate before you fit it.

and; the sliding engaging ring stays with the pto and it's lever.

Why can't you leave the PTO in place until you fit the overdrive?

There's no real reason that I couldn't, but I have to remove the winch and its drive shafts before I extract the engine and transmission so if I also remove the PTO I can keep the whole lot together.

Having the complete PTO+winch package on a shelf somehow seems preferable to having half on a shelf and half in another vehicle..... Of course it also means that the entire unit is available for use elsewhere if the mood strikes!
