Hey people,

I have recently replaced the rear diff ball joint however it now makes an annoying squeaking/ rickety sound every time I drive over an uneven surface (e.g. bumps, driveways etc). I cleaned and applied plenty of wheel bearing grease to the shaft before fitting and tightened it up to what I think is ****** tight.

Any ideas why this is happening and how to fix? Could try to spray some silicone spray on it but looking for a long term fix.

Appreciate your suggestions.

Cheers Joe

Try some wd40 on your springs, and exhaust hangers where the metal hooks into the rubber.

When you replaced the A frame after fitting the ball joint did you tighten the bushes with the rear axle on full droop? If you did you might be stressing the rubber bushes causing the noise.
Try slacking off the suspension nuts and bolts and retightning with the weight of the vehicle on the springs. This might solve your problem.

Cheers

I didn't have to remove the 'a' frame, just the ball joint retaining block. While not discounting the 'a' frame rubbers, I had the same issue as described by 110 which drove me mad for a while, spraying the 'a' frame made no difference. I then started on the spring retainers, which made a slight improvement - but the main noise remained. So I then sprayed every conceivable joint, bolt etc. Only when I lubed the exhaust hanger hook in rubber as described did it stop.

110, is the new ball joint and adjustable unit? If yes, has the slack been taken out of the adjustment?

Hi guys really liking the input - thanks!

I too removed and replaced the ball joint simply by removing the joint block (2 bolts). So I technically I haven't disrupted the a-frame bushes.

I have sprayed and replaced/ refitted the rear sway bar ball joints, replaced rear shock bottom bushes and sprayed every bushing in sight.

However I haven't touched the exhaust connections as I didn't really consider that the exhaust would be influenced by surface undulations. They will definitely be my next point of focus.

Cheers

The ball joint taper is designed to be a dry fit, any grease or lubricant on it will not allow it to seat correctly and it will move causing the squeak.

Check the noise isn't coming from the sway bar link ball joints....These have a habit of squeaking continually if dry.
