Whats your choice and why.

I voted plastic, with metal you can get rust and other crap in the fuel and not see it until it is going into your tank.

With plastic atleast you can see if it's been rubbing and replace the container.

Also the empty weight of plastic is far less so a lot eaiser to handle once used.

Plastic. Yet to see one rust, lighter (when empty), quieter and I have not worn mine out yet.

Metal cause can't beat the price i got them for style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif $0.00

I would say the plastic ones would be better, lighter and don't rust, but hey for the price i paid, 8) i no complain.

I agree with this guy.
(I even like Land Rovers  style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif )

Seems to be a bit of consensus (yeah Ron I know thats probably spelled wrong ) as to the reasons why most prefer plastic.

Plastic. Hands Down.

They expand better, seal better and are lighter.

I have seen a plastic container fall of the back of a county at 70kmph! All it did was deform, no leakages etc.

Buy a Rheem Black Container, they are awesome!

Dave.

Plastic, for all the above reasons. Plastic cans also dont arc out with static electricity and cause explosions. However plastic can be dangerous aswell, poly ute liners are lethal when people fill cans inside the ute tray. Matt

i was gonna say metal for strength. and less chance of it cracking, and you can boil water in it etc.

after reading all the reasoning on here i decided to go for plastic.
they appear to stronger than i thought.

stronger, lighter and cheaper
thats three good reasons.

I think lighter is the main one, especially when you are loading a few of them into the car for a long touring trip. The weight difference can make a lot of difference. Matt

They can still build up static, more than the steel. However because of the screw lid rather than the pop top, less of a problem with a fuel air explosion. Have seen it happen with a metal can on a hot day. A carpenter opened his can to fill a generator. Under pressure the fuel sprayed as a fine mist ignited via the hot motor on the gen set. The explosion was huge, with him in the middle. Only part not burned was his feet because of his boots. "Lucky" for him (if you could say that) he held his breath, no burns to the lungs or swelling of the throat. He survived but took him a couple of years to be happy about living.

I wouldn't think weight would be all that relevant, the weight of the container is fairly minor compared with the weight of fuel.

By the way a 20litre container should only be filled to about 18 litres to avoid the problems indicated above.

Speaking of explosions. It has been proven that women are more likely than men to cause an explosion at a service station as women regularily re-enter the car during the fill process. This creates static electricity, when the reach for the nozzle the static discharges to the car and ignites the petrol vapour. Ka Boom. Matt

has anyone heard the correct prcedures for refuelling?

you are supposed to earth yourself on the vehicle before you touch the bowser......then you are supposed to be earthing yourself away from the fuel filler all through the process.....(ie one hand on the roofline of the vehicle and the other holding the nozle)

everyone has seen this procedure and everyone follows this practice during refuelling. you never see anyone pumping fuel while on the phone!!

I have a video of exactly that somewhere at work, taken from a servo security camera in Canada (IIRC)

They showed a couple on Mythbusters, the show on Discovery Channel. They were actually testing the myth that mobile phones actually cause the explosions. Consider the myth busted, its absolute rubbish, they made an air tight container and pumped an air fuel mixture in (in varying concentrations) and then rang a mobile phone inside the chamber, NOTHING. They then tried it with the static idea. Bingo- explosions galore. Matt

a ringing phone doesnt ignite fuel.... its the signal it puts out can charge up your hair or clothing....increasing the static charge in the body to a level high enough to arc at the first chance available.

i have seen cigarettes thrown into a tub of petrol and just extinguish....
but i would go and try to prove it. i think the temperature plays a big part.
the hotter it is the more fuel vapour. the ciggarette incident was on a cold day and the guy thought it was a drum of water.

I try and convince the kids i teach at school why they shouldnt smoke. I gave up on the health risks, they dont care. But when you tell them some people could make the repayments on a new car each year with the amount of money they spend on smokes. That opens their eyes, but then they point out they dont pay for them. They will have to one day.

Stacey smoked when we first got togther. When she moved in she had 4 left. They were the last 4 ciggies she ever smoked. Matt

Not if she smokes. I detest the habit. I told stacey that if we were going to be together i only had one condition. She quit smoking. For one I dont like kissing ash trays, after smoking her breath made me ill. Two, i dont want my house and car stinking of smoke, and three we have better things to spend our money on.

You could get your wife to quit DZ. Tell her that she is to quit, then every time she wants a pack of smokes put the money in a money tin. Then at the end of the year go on holiday with the money, she will see quickly how much she has been wasting. Matt

There's an episode of MYTHBUSTERS titled "Cell phone destruction" - probably the one you speak about - on SBS-TV at 7.30pm (Qld time) TONIGHT.

Great series, by the way.

Kev .

A mixture - depending on application, general fuels deisel, unleaded etc are usually in metal "rheem" type containers whilst smaller containers could be plastic ie combined fuel/baroil for chainsaws.

They are all stored (or should be) in vented metal lockers.
