View Full Version : TD5 strange values in oil pressure

Hello everyone! I come here for help, because I'm going crazy.
I'm trying to finish restoring a Defender TD5 2005 and the oil pressure is very strange. When the Defender is cold in the morning, pressure reaches 85psi easily at idle, if I press the accelerator a little it can reach 115psi and 120psi. However when the oil are hot, because I drive a little, the pressure can drop to levels close to 4-6psi at idle, but while driving it stays around 25psi
I would appreciate ideas and tips, that I not longer know what to do ...

Where's the sensor mounted? I have an aftermarket sensor mounted on a T piece at the Same place as the original pressure sender. It returns some pretty weird values from time to time - I just ignore them now. Most of the time it makes sense (2.3 - 3.5 bar) but other times it either goes Way high or ridiculously low. Not sure why so I'm no help to you really but if anyone has any similar experience or rational explanation I'd be interested.

I don't know the TD5 as we drive a 300 TDI. But the oil pressure typically falls when the oil is hot, as it is more viscous when hot - this isn't necessarily a problem.
If however your 25psi during normal (but hot) driving is less than LR advise, your oil pressure relief valve may be worn and allowing hot oil to flow past it, resulting in lower pressure.
I presume that your oil level is correct? Because low oil can lead to lower pressures.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.
Does the dash light flicker to indicate that you have low oil pressure at idle? Are you checking the readings in Kpa and not lb in?
If you don't have the factory workshop manual go to Legion Land Rover, the Columbian
Landrover owners site and look up the manuals section. Everything you need is there. Or follow this link. Legion Land Rover Colombia :::::: Bienvenidos!! (http://www.legionlandrover.com/index.php'sec=31&id=6&tipo=Defender)
Good luck.
Nino.

Hi Everyone, thanks for the answers and opinions.
I disassemble everything to see the faults and already discovered the problems, and I say "problems" because they are several.
The problem of high pressure is because the "relief valve" was stuck and never open.
The problem of low pressure is because there is pressure leak in the crankshaft and the previous owner had the oil pump installed wrong.
I just pulled the engine and I will take to fix tood, including new rings, shells and gaskets.
Thanks again for your help
