Any advice on changing out the drivers side engine mount. It is in a shocking position in particular the bolts. Are there any parts that need removing to allow better access?

Also on an unrelated topic- I have noticed my engine gradually becoming louder with time (like a rattly can/ tinny noise). I recently adjusted the valves but little improvement - also only one or two required adjustment. The engine has bulk grunt and definitely not down on power and has normal oil consumption.

I can't remember the last time the timing was ever done. Whenever I ask my mechanic about checking the timing he says the engine timing on 4bd1 rarely needs to be adjust and hence it never happens. Question is, is the noisiness likely to be attributed to the timing or do I need to replace valve springs or what???

Abundant/ excessive Diesel clatter. This sums it up perfectly

Your soundproofing (if any!) hasn't deteriorated or fallen off has it?

If you are in Brisbane Archies Motors at Rocklea has a long history with Isuzu trucks and is excellent with older Isuzu engines.

Haha that's always a possibility. Though I have been soundproofing the vehicle for a while now. I think I've applied dynamat and overlay products to every accessible surface.

Today I had my car parked up alongside my mates - both 4bd1s of the same era. Mine was noticeable louder. Hopefully it's something trivial!

I assume if you're convinced its engine there's no change to the noise when you depress the clutch pedal (ie definitely not gearbox clatter)?

Only asking as it would be hard to compare both vehicles unless you were outside - which implies neutral with the clutch engaged so the clatter could be coming from the gearbox.

Hi Steve yeah there definitely is gearbox clatter (which has somewhat reduced since installing a brand new harmonic balancer) but no this clatter sounds to be emanating from either top/ drivers side. I have constant air in the system (that could be contributing), which when I tried to bleed out, noticed that the primer pump is buggered. I now have the truck scheduled in for a full diagnostic/ fuel system service at a local diesel injection specialist.

I don't know if the fuel system needs, or certain associated components, need adjustment from time to time but I can guarantee that it hasn't had any attention for at least 20 years.

I'd be interested to know what a "full diagnostic" on a 4bd1 consists of.
Pretty sure mine hasn't had anything other than a new priming pump and usual fuel filters since it was built in '81.

Engine noise at idling is very dependent on slight changes in idling speed, so if this has changed, it could explain the increase. Also, look for a bit of bodywork that is vibrating in sympathy - I note for example that at present I have another rivet broken on the bonnet - must replace that.

Check the air filter housing and brackets too. I'd reckon its the right sort of construction to create a nice clattery sound at idle if one of the mounts was broken/loose.

If the RH engine mount is buggered, I'd be changing that first before spending too much energy on troubleshooting. If the mount is allowing more movement than usual there could be a whole lot of weird things going on in sympathy.

Absolutely - there is a tendency for the air filter mounts to break. I welded mine once, and reinforced it the second tme - it hasn't broken since. And it is noisy when broken.

I've repaired my air cleaner brackets by welding in more angle to reinforce the existing angle.

My bonnet does have a few broken rivets but the underside is surfaced with soundproofing incl. dynamat. I will look to fix replace these as a priority.

As for the air cleaner brackets - they appear to be fine and I've also added rubber/ dense foam about the canister to eliminate metal-metal contact.

The noise is noticeable at idle and right through the rev range. Only time it's not as pronounced is under big load and boost (probably because exhaust and turbo whistle dominate)

I plan to replace the Rh engine mount but I just can't seem to get access. It's in such a bugger of a spot. It seams as though removing the steering mechanism would allow better access but I'm reluctant to do remove it.
