Because if you don't, your wheel bearings will fail and this will happen 8O :!:

At least you don't have to worry about unpacking the jack to fix it.!!
Your very lucky it happend at a slow speed on a straight road, or things could have been much worse. 8O

Ripper Pic, would have made a great video clip if someone had ahppened to be in the right place at the right time.

I agree on preventative maintenance, I wrote about it some time ago when I had wheel bearing failure in the RR.

ok, so what were the warnings and how long were they there for before it happened?

Phoenix
31st January 2005, 03:42 PM
2 days before I thought I heard a noise like part of a tyre or brake pad rubbing. I put it down to a misadjusted handbrake that I had adjusted the day previous to that. other than that, nothing tangible. That noise went away.

I can look back and think of a couple of incidents, but hindsight is always an interesting thing

oh, wait, there were a couple of loud mechanical sounding thunk and crack noises about 2 seconds before the wheel came off style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

but once again being a landy it happens at home and not out in the middle of nowhere.

however if I hadn't neglected to maintain the bearings properly, I may have spotted, or avoided the issue in the first place.

My guess would be that the front drivers side wheel lost contact with the front drivers side for say just a few moments. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

At last a LR that tells you when it "WANTS" to be worked on 8O

Hi Vlad
You havent owned a Series Landy style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
Surely you have seen "The Gods Must Be Crazy"
Didnt you know us Series Pilots all carry a spare handbrake inside the vehicle.A brick tied to a string,as seen in "The Gods Must Be Crazy"
Actually they are a factory bonus and usually stored on the floor next to the drivers' feet style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

8) you bloody taswegians,
that is not a safe way to jack a vehicle,
it contravenes the department of labour and industry guidelines under section 147 'rules and safety precautions for raising vehicles for the performance of maintenance and such like'
also refer to the 'land rover maintenance manual - series vehicles'
and 'tyres and the correct use of'
by the dunlop company
and also reference should be made to the 'lucas prince of darkness positioning of lamps and other electrical things'
wot will stuff up due to the unpermitted angles to which they have been subjected.

speaking of boat trailer bearings - a friend bought a new boat (with new trailer) and as he drove away less than 5 km from the dealer the thing started smoking to buggery. Turns out the dealer hadn't greased the bearings of the newly constructed trailer.

He finally got that issue sorted out and after the first service of the boat, he went to go out for the day. He decided to check the oil levels in the gearbox before heading out. Guess what ? There was none. Yep, none.
Now wouldn't that have been annoying (to say the least) to get out there and have the gearbox destroy itself.

The boat place was unapologetic about the issue. Guess who's never going back tio them, and has been telling everyone he knows to avoid same. He's just ****ed off they got $35K of his hard-earned.

Another good reason why everyone should have some basic understanding of mechanics and try and do the simple things at home. Or at least be able to make sure, what you pay for is what you get.

I can top that, I used to deal with the Hyundai dealerships in brisbane a fair bit, One day while I was there the transporter was running the new Trajets off the truck and as he took it round the corner and up the drive it made the most awful sounding grinding crunching sound and stopped. They dragged it into the workshop and found no oil in the diffs, they checked the rest of them on the truck and none of them had oil.

the simple things like oil changes which you pay big bucks for can be done by anyone.

i can tell you how to do it right now its that simple.

and best of all you know it has been changed, what grade of oil is used and when it was changed. another plus is while you are under your truck you get to check around to see if anything is leaking.

the more time you spend under your own truck the more chance you got of recognizing if something is out of place. the more chance of being able to get going if something happens out in the middle of nowhere.

if any one wants advice on how to do oil changes just ask or pm me.
the more you know to do yourself the better off you will be,
both financial wise and knowledge wise.
