View Full Version : Which Bolt do I need?

You’ve just freed a rusted bolt, but in freeing it you have hacked, filed, sawed, cold chiselled, ground and blasted with the red-tipped spanner. Looks like you’ll have to get a replacement bolt, but what bolt do you need? The Parts Book is not particularly helpful in letting you know what to ask for from your hardware supplier. Here is how to determine what you need.

Get yourself a vernier caliper that reads in both fractions and millimetres and some screw pitch gauges. download my thread charts from Aulro or buy a copy of Sidder's Guide to Screw Threads. A little practice and you will be able to identify most screw threads.

If you had read the article, you would have realised that I was talking of bolts in general. [Your- word deleted and replaced by] This type of sarcastic response is the sort of thing that turns new-comers away from forums like this. Not everyone knows the ins and outs of a duck's rs [deletedlike you purport to].

I put a bit of effort researching and writing the contents of that pdf because after having been involved in the sale of quality hardware I found that often I was asked for bolts and the information provided in those requests made it near impossible to identify the correct bolt required by the purchaser. That experience involved people who were building or maintaining their own light aircraft. Having joined this forum, and having seen a similar enquiry from another member, I thought that what I had written was an useful contribution to the knowledge base here. The comments made by Dinty and Brian Hjelm make me wonder if making a worthwhile contribution is worth the effort.

Steady up mate! The first sentence was fine, the rest unnecessary . Perhaps as a new comer you should read a few of the rules of this site.

Fair suck of the sauce bottle! What was sarcastic about either response?

They mistook your title - written as question - as a question in itself. I put it to you that it was two genuine responses trying to help you, not deride you.

Just to remind you of what I wrote:

You'll notice that there is no use of "I" there. The final sentence directs the reader to a solution to a commonly encountered problem.

Nowhere in this particular post is there a request for help (although elsewhere I acknowledge that I have been given the help I sought). What I meant to complain of were comments which suggested that the post had not been read and understood.

I'd like to thank the 30-odd members who have taken the time to read the pdf. It would be nice to get feedback from them.

I'll throw my 2 cents in. I'm very much a newcomer to Land Rovers and this forum. One of the things I like about this forum (and the series section in particular) is the friendliness of it and the willingness to help. So far members have offered me replacement parts and sent me details on workshop tools etc. Looking through some of the facebook forums I see lots of aggravation and snide comments which I don't want to be a part of. I just want to chat about Land Rovers and receive some tips from those who know more than me in a supportive environment.

When I read your post, Old man Emu, my first thought was that you were trying to find the size of a particlaur bolt, it's only in your final sentance when it becomes clear that you are offering some help in the form of your pdf. I have looked at the pdf and decided it was well worth saving for future reference, so sincere thanks for the work you did in putting it together. I am one of the ones who has struggled with identifying bolts from the parts manual alone.

I have found the ohers that have posted on this thread to be most helpful to me. If you look through some of their other threads you will see that sarcasm is not a part of what they do on this site. I do think you jumped to conclusions a little prematurely and made the type of comment that I came here to avoid.

I have hesitated on commenting on this for fear of only making things worse, hopefully I haven't. The reason we are all here is to learn about/talk about fixing up old Land Rovers, not to have a go at each other.

Cheers

Chris66,
Thanks for saying that you have saved the pdf for future reference. I hope that it gets you out of trouble. That is why I wrote and posted it.

ome, I don't think there was anything wrong with your response.
the first two respondents just didn't read what you posted. you were correct.
we cannot prompt people to read and absorb everything we post.
I see that one other respondent also had his post edited by a moderator on this forum.
I have also purchased things from brians retirement fund stall at the various places he and I go to.

to the others that posted,
I ask you to go back to ome's first post and re read it, you two got off on the wrong foot.

heaven knows how often I have done the same here, and I have been here for a very long time, eh' inc.

ome, I am involved with ga aircraft also.
