We are thinking to get 2nd hand D4 TDV6 2.7L. So I was just wondering whether anyone knows about their service interval and also cost so at least we can budget for the next 4 years of owning it. Thanks.

Howdy, you'll love it. A lot of different answers really, if it's still under warranty and you decide to use a dealer your looking at about 350-550 for an A service. When you do a C service it's abut 750-1000 depending on what you need to have replaced. Things to watch out for our windscreen wipers, LR want 160 to replace which is ridiculous. Pollen filters as well aren't cheap I believe around 100.
The service interval is every 24k which is reasonable for once a year. Personally I get mine done every 12k and it costs me 285, that's just a lube, oil and filter change. This is just for my piece of mine due to the conditions I'm in and the towing I do.

Now I'm sure there are independents that are a lot more reasonable then dealers, and will likely give you better service. One thing to check is the condition of the brakes as discos go through them quickly due to the weight of vehicle, replaced mine at 60k and though I could have just done pads I decided on rotors to at a cost of 550, completed myself as its so easy, LR wanted 1200.

Hope that answers your questions

Hi,

The routine services will be fairly similar to other large 4wds and yes brakes and tyres can get costly.

More important than the routine services though are the 'large' once off expenses. Checking to see if any of these have been done in the last couple of years will help you to work out whether you have lots to spend quite soon:

Timing belt / fuel pump belt
Upgraded air suspension Compressor
Gearbox service and steel pan conversion
Air strut / shock renewal
Battery / alternator replacement

They are great cars if you find a well looked after example. Good luck!

Matt

Hi
You can find the D4 service schedule (as a pdf) here; http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/184336-d4-maintenance-schedules.html

The timing Belt/Fuel pump belt are at 168,000 km or seven years. This is a big ticket item because of the labour cost.

The Steel Pan conversion/auto transmission service is up to you, but probably by 80000 km. the steel pan conversion is an ongoing cost saving since the plastic transmission pan is a throwaway item on the transmission service. The steel pan enables filter removal and replacement without destroying the pan. Land Rover have 240,000km/10 years schedule for the transmission service but most on here feel that that is too long, particularly when ZF only guarantee the fluid of a life of 100,000km. The main cost for this is the fluid, buy it from someone other than Land Rover. There are plenty of threads on this issue.

The compressor is a bit more problematic, the main problem they seem to have is that the desiccant in the drier becomes a powder and that slows the compressor down causing suspension faults. There are now kits available that have replacement desiccant, filters, piston glide ring and seals. In fact I am about to order one for the D3. Now that I have had the timing belts done.

I haven't had any problems with the air bags or shocks as yet nor the alternator (he says fingers and toes crossed). My original battery lasted five years and there are after market batteries available. Land Rover, of course, charge and arm and a leg for a new one.

My D3 is now six years old and has 168,000+ km on the clock and I still have the permagrin. You should enjoy a D4 immensely

Cheers
Mike
