I am considering buying a 6X6 perentie but am somewhat put off by the ridiculous rego cost I have been quoted by TMR Qld. Because of the high GVM of 5600kg it is classed as a LR truck with the following cost:-
Rego fee...................891.00
Admin fee................. 64.10
CTP insurance..........1289.00
Stamp duty on $16K...480.00
Plate fee.................... 26.35
Total......................$2750.45

What has anyone else in Qld done? Is there any other way you can reduce the CTP - this seems to be the biggest cost. I know you can reduce the GVM to under 4500kg and this will make it cheaper but that defeats the purpose of having this type of vehicle. I should note that I am not entitled to any registration concessions of any kind. Also can someone tell me the distance between centres of the rear axles, as you have to state this for rego, I guessed approx 1.5 metres but I think it might be a little less than that. :(

I believe it is about 36" - which is why you can't go much larger than std with the wheels...

Firstly make sure they register it as Rigid Truck No Trailers (RT0) and configuration IR2 (1 axle and 1 axle group and not a 3 axle vehicle).
The rear axles on the Perentie 6X6 are less than 1 metre apart and are therefore considered 1 axle group which is the same as a single axle.

The No Trailer definition is for trailers over 4.5 Tonne ATM, trailers less than 4.5 Tonne are not counted and therefore the 0 specification.

For wheelbase you measure from the front axle centre to the mid point of the rear group. The rear group is under 1 metre between axle centres, I think it is 900mm (but someone will have to check) and very important for rego costs.

I wouldn't want anything other than standard wheels on it Ben so no problem there.

It should be $563. (National heavy vehicle charges ex NSW RMS site Registration charges - Registration - Heavy vehicles - Business & Industry - Roads and Maritime Services (http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/business-industry/heavy-vehicles/registration/charges.html))

Don't know about the other costs like CTP but it should be lower too.

I will have to get that rechecked when I get an exact measurement for the distance between the rear axle centres Diana. I agree the CTP should be cheaper but I think there is collusion there with the insurance companies - their price is the same doesn't matter which one you use. Also I just measured a Michelin XZL on a 110 mil rim and it measures 800mm height so thats 400 x2 from centre plus the distance between tyres which I seem to remember is around 200mm so it will be interesting to get the exact measurement from a perentie 6X6. Please, can anyone help here with this measurement.

I think Diana is right. 900mm. I seem to recollect that was the figure used when mine was registered.

I seem to recollect that was the figure used when mine was registered.I know the Perentie is less than 1metre because I was annoyed that my Factory Defender 6X6 is 4.7Tonne GVM but 1020mm (40") axle spacing so I either have to pay the additional axle charge or have the vehicle engineered down to 4490Kg and it annoyed me that the Perentie came in under the 1000mm spacing.

Lengthen one set of suspension arms and shorten the other...

Read on from Post #38 in This Thread (http://remlr.com/forum/index.php'topic=1465.30).

In Post #51, I confirm that a 6x6 is registered under National Charges as a 2 axle truck because the rear axle spacing is 940mm.

Re the CTP cost, can you get a lower rate by specifying the vehicle as a truck-based Camper Van?

Lengthen one set of suspension arms and shorten the other...Thats true, but I'd also need to shorten the inter-axle prop shaft. Conversly if I reduce the 4.7 Tonne GVM by 205kg I avoid the heavy vehicle weight tax altogether and the axle spacing is irrelevant for vehicles with a GVM below 4.5 Tonne.

It also saves me $141 in annual registration fees. After all how often do you need to use the whole GVM of your vehicle? Particularly when you can put the 205kg on a trailer and still come in under the GCM (or Gross Train Weight for this vehicle)

There is a registration calculator on the Qld. Transport website.

How do you go about registering a 6x6 on a car rego in Queensland?

Do a bit of googling.
I found this:
List Of South-east Queensland Approved Engineers - Queensland - SAU Community (http://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/146526-list-of-south-east-queensland-approved-engineers/)

A word of warning:
I was reading somewhere a few weeks ago where a fellow did this and his insurance and registration became more expensive.
A car rego is on a state system but truck rego is nationally administered.
In his case it would have been cheaper to get a light truck licence.
That might apply to you as well. Do a bit of investigation and get back to us.

The Camper I built on a Perentie 6x6 chassis costs me a total of $1081.50 for 12 months rego including CTP 336.6 Rego $696 .05 Traffic improvement fee $48.85.
