Just thought i would try to start a thread on all things NRL and league.
It has been a big few days in footy,Ben Hannet coming to the mighty Cowboys which i think is great for the club and great for him. JT,Matt Scott,James Tamou all ruled out for the Kangaroos but it will give all three a full pre-season under Paul Green. St Helens 14 Wigan 6 in the English league, that hit on Hohia was very nasty, but he brought it on himself. But to punch a player who is on the ground knocked out is a dog act. All this talk about the Kangaroos being a little weak this year is a bit far fetched. They will still have a powerful side. And lastly Tonga Vs PNG,i think PNG will be a little outclassed in this game, but expect some BIG hits from both sides.

A great chance for Penrith's Matt Moylan, & Josh Mansour, & Newcastle's Sione Mata'utia to be selected for the four Nations, along with Ben Hunt. Aaron Woods , Dylan Napa & Josh Papali did ok in the Prime Ministers 13 against PNG. Ben Flower cost his team any chance of winning the Super League Final. OK Hohaia elbowed Flower, but any smart footballer knows how to get payback, without drawing the attention of the officials. Coach Nathan Brown has done well over in England, Bob

Aaron woods will go alright good prop. Hunt is going to be a superstar, with Bennett's guidance he can only get better. A bit like when Bennett worked with Soward.

Big Artie,The autobiography.
Not a bad read, lot of behind the scenes stuff on Arties life.
Gees footy was biff and bash in those days.
You sort of forget what it was really like, after watching the modern game.
Back to NRL,the pressure will be on Bennet,i bet he will be all over the Courier Mail all the time. Not really something i approve of,they should give him a bit of space.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Don't worry mate, Bennett loves it, plays them like a fish. It's all part of the theatre. Old Artie had a pub team on the Redcliffe peninsula years ago, my mad brother & his mates played in it. The standard was ordinary, but the party after, legendary. How long before the season starts? Bob

Mason at Manly? Wow nah Bob had no idea, not a bad move. It seems Manly are not a happy club at the moment. I could be wrong and probably am,it looks like a lot of players are looking around for new clubs? In terms of Milford and Hunt, very exciting times ahead for the Broncos. Tariq sims is a very good addition for the Knights. It won't be long before he pulls on the blue jersey for NSW. The last i heard Packer was talking to the Broncos and Penrith, but if the NRL wont register the contract it wont happen. I think its time choc moved on,maybe a new club would be good for him. And Parramatta are building towards being a great club again. Talking parra though, i dont understand how Jarrayd Hayne managed to poll enough votes to tie with JT for the Dally M this years?

Good balance between youth and experience. The simple fact is blokes like Slater,Smith,JT,Gallen,Hodges, don't have many years left in them. But the talent coming through to cover the looses is very good. When a bloke like Cherry-evens still can't get a run on spot it shows how healthy things are. Matt Scott will be missed. He is very much like a Shane Webke, lots of meters when it matters. It amazes me how guys like Aiden Gurrea and Sam Thaiday and even Hodges slip through the Cowboys recruiting system.

Some rule changes are necessary to make the game more attractive. Contested scrums and contested play the ball as used to be. Remove the second defensive marker from the play the ball. Reduce the ruck area from 10 metres to 5. This would force attacking back lines to line out deeper and thus encourage a fast running and passing back line game. Bring back the biff.

Yep,the scrum is just a bloody joke. It used to be an attacking option, now its just a rest. Let the big boys push and hookers actually 'hook' for the ball. I would also like to see the return of the biff, the no punch rule has made the game look very soft, the amount of time lost in general play with push and shove and just girlie name calling is rubbish.

A few happenings going on.
Canberra have signed Wests Tigers utility Blake Austin on a three year deal starting in season 2015. He has been given an early release from his contract to take up the play-making spot for the Raiders. One of the stand out players from what will go down as the worst year in history for the Tigers. So a good move by Canberra. I personally feel the way the Tigers handled the whole Mick Potter situation was disgraceful, but to his credit Potter handled himself extremely well. A very good coach in the making. I think 'Hook' will put some pride back into the tigers.
Shane Flanagan has still not been cleared by the NRL for the Sharks pre-season training in the first week of November. His 12 month suspension began on December 17 last year, but the NRL has told Flanagan he needs to undertake further work and counselling to have his suspension lifted. Personally,i think he is bloody lucky to even have a job,i don't believe for a second he wasn't aware what was going on.
It seems the Ben Flower,Lance Hohaia case made be headed for criminal charges. The club and police have not yet decided what course of action to take just yet. Look for that one to get messy.
Some Cowboy news,Lachlan Coote is looking forward to preseason training after sitting this season and is fully fit,but after Michael Morgans strong season at fullback where will Paul Green use him? Northern Pride coach Jason Demetriou has signed a one year deal to be Paul Greens assistant coach, which i think is a great move for him and the Cowboys.

Ben Flower got a 13-game ban for the hit on Lance Hohaia which will rule him out of two preseason trials, the world club challenge, and ten super league games. He will not be able to play until April next year. He pleaded guilty to a grade F violent and aggressive punching charge. It is the longest suspension charge ever handed down by the RFL. The previous record was held by former Wigan hooker Terry Newton who was suspended for seven matches in 2005.
How serious is Parramatta about chasing Falou? And what chance would they have with the rugby world cup coming up? I have also heard Foran is looking for a new club, just not sure where. He would be a good player for any club.
From what i have seen and read England is going to have a very good side this year for the four nations. The NRL based English players have all had strong seasons. Widdop and Graham had very good seasons. But i don't think Samoa are going to be easy beats as some have predicted. New Zealand are always a mixed bag and i always find it hard to understand the up and down performances they have, but as always i want them to win.

No guarantees have been given by Greg Inglis but Kangaroos captain Cameron Smith is convinced the South Sydney superstar will end his career in the NRL. Inglis is expected to be the next poster boy targeted by rival sports after Jarryd Hayne's sensational decision to try his hand at NFL. It emerged Inglis was offered $2 million a year by the French Rugby Union earlier this season but knocked it back because he wanted to focus on premiership with the Rabbitohs. Now that he has helped to break South Sydney's 43-year title drought and seen Hayne make a bold call, there are fears Inglis might become the latest big name player to abandon the NRL. It would be a devasting blow for a code also reeling from the defection of Sonny Bill Williams and Sam Burgess to rugby. And Inglis would not have eased any nerves at NRL headquarters when he spoke of his future as the Kangaroos assembled yesterday at their Four Nations training camp in Brisbane. "My future is in rugby league for now but doors are always there to be opened to see what is on the other side," he said. "I put everything on hold to concentrate on the ultimate goal of winning a premiership with the bunnies. Now i will keep my options open." However,Inglis-who has two years left on his South Sydney deal-vowed not to break his NRL contract to pursue other sports. He said if lured away from league,it would be for the challenge not the money.
I would hate to see him leave, but 2 million a season would be very hard to turn down.

And the scabby Broncos got off scot free as usual. Should be renamed the Teflon Team, nothing ever sticks to them.
As an aside, does anyone know the true story of how the Broncos took over the Wests Juniors and Old Boys Club? The club offered the hand of friendship to the then new Broncos to use their facilities when the Broncos had none. Founding members mortgaged their houses to start that club. After the Broncos took over life members were told they had to join the Broncos Leagues Club. Some very bitter Wests supporters came out of that.

G'day Bob, I think both sides got a little bit carried away during the Haka, I think when the Aussies stand firm together it shows the Kiwi's that its game on. It looks like a few of the Samoan boys had a big night in the Valley. Looks like a 'incident' with police and will face court. Samoan players were fighting with another group of men and police were called in,but the players refused to co-operate with them. Cowboys center Tautau Moga was arrested and it is said Reni Maitua was involved, Samoa coach Matt Parish had no idea about it on the way to training. The police and the NRL are investigating the matter.

Samoan team in a bit of trouble.
Capsicum spray was used during a wild brawl involving NRL stars in Brisbane. When NRL players from the Samoan national team brawled with another group of men in Brisbane, police were forced to use capsicum spray. Potentially four Samoan players could be suspended from the fight outside Fortitude Valley nightclub Hot Gossip on Sunday morning. Cowboys center Tautau Moga was arrested and charged with public nuisance and Bulldogs veteran Reni Maitua was also caught up in the fray. Maitua is contracted to the Bulldogs next season, but has strict behaviour guidelines after an incident involving a taxi driver in Sydney last year. The NRL is sifting through the police incident report and their integrity unit may make a call on suspensions today. Samoa plays England at Lang Park this Saturday night in the opening of the Four Nations tournament,a double header that also features Australia against New Zealand. Eight men, several of whom are part of the Samoan team, face court on November 4.
It is understood none of the Samoan players were directly sprayed with capsicum. "The NRL Integrity Unit has been conducting interviews in relation to the Samoan team incident," an NRL spokesman said yesterday. The loss of Moga will be a major blow for Samoa.
Bloody hell, this is the last thing the NRL needs leading into what promises to be a fantastic tournament. I don't want to comment on the incident as details are very thin at the minute. It could be a case of drunk players being stupid,or simply players defending themselves against some drunk fools. Either way players can't put themselves in these situations.

Must admit i am a fan of Kearney, but i also understand he is not the most technical of coaches. I think the Kiwis have enough class players to win the four nations. As for England, the players that are in the NRL are the only ones i am familiar with,so a lot of their squad is a unknown to me so its hard for me to say how they will go.But if the rest of them have the same heart and courage as James Graham give them the trophy now. Samoa have put together a strong squad also, but will lack the polish to match the grunt. I cant ignore Australia at all, that would be foolish,I just wonder how having that many new faces in the team will go. But to be realistic they are the number 1 team in the world, and are very well coached. This is the sort of tournament international rugby league needs.

I'd be tempted to use Greg Bird in defence, hide Hunt out wide, bring Hunt in to attack. Smith played 5/8, after DCE got hurt, and made far too many tackles, 42, taking him out of the attack when desperately needed. Farah played 5/8 in the 2nd half, not his best game. The biggest mistake would be to play DCE, if injured, he was out of sorts at5/8., & the Kiwis took advantage of it. Bob

Frequent defence in the courts for all sorts.

On & Off the subject of RL.
Our kids season ended in September & we wanted them to have some form of sport to do in the Summer.
We thought about tennis because there is not much else in a small country town, we were just about to try and organised this when we received these AFL Auskick forms.
We had a talk about it & decided to let the kids go along.
What an excellent program. It's all games based, the bloke doing it is just great with kids & the kids just loved it.
Why doesn't the NRL have something like this?
In our case there is no AFL type competition on the Atherton tablelands but there is a strong Junior RL competition but come the off season nothing!
2 of our 5 kids just love RL & 1 is pretty good at it, the other has his days, why not keep there interest up, keep them keen, keep them enjoying the game?
Seems the NRL can't do this so the AFL steps into the breach & who knows, the NRL might loose 5 young players to AFL if they get a comp going around our way.
I think the NRL better get their act together with juniors! In Doomadgee the Titans constantly visit & work with the kids, no competition here at all, but nobody does anything similar in Ravenshoe where they have a good junior club.
Seems ridiculous to me & not doing the game or the kids any favours.

Australia, Vs. NZ , in the final. Some great Rugby league played, from all teams. Samoa fell for rope a dope. Everyone knows,, get aggressive with Polynesians, they lose the plot, & want to bash you. I like NZ, they have the skill, & the head space, to go all the way. Isaac Luke, could be the man to give NZ the Cup. Will be listening to the final , on a wireless, on an island close to home. Yep Samoa well and truly lost the plot today, but by no means have they disgraced themselves. As i said earlier in the thread they just lack the polish to finish off what they start, some unlucky calls and very bad disipline also killed any chance they had. I like the way NZ are going along, but playing for the full 80 minutes has not happened. Left hand edge defence needs to smarten up as well.

Manu can have a pocket full of rocks, or a pocket full of diamonds. I love it when he brings his A game. Australia have lifted their intensity, but I still think this may be NZ's year. Bob

Absolute masterstroke by Wayne Bennett to bring Adam Blair to the Broncos. He will bring some mongrel that has been missing from the Broncos forward pack for a while now. Not sure if letting Barba go is the right move though,he is a very gifted young man,and with Bennett's influence who knows how much more talent he could have unlocked? The other question i have is Barba mature enough to handle Sydney this time around?

That's always been a criticism of Bennett. He always has top players to work with. But top players may not play , without a top man manager. Bennett is a top man manager, he surrounds himself with the right people, as he has now, and gets to know the players. He is a father figure to many young men who have not had such a good life, they idolise him, he gets the best out of them. That's how he does it. Another new face, to keep an eye on, is Joseph Boyce. Bennett bought him up from Newcastle , keep an eye on him. Bob

I hope he can handle Sydney this time around, but without his family he will be hurting. Its a bloody shame the Cowboys or Titans couldn't find a home for him. Sydney has a way with taking good young indigenous talent, then chewing them up and spitting them out.

I hope not!!! I have never liked this man or the direction he wants to take the game. The no punch rule was the worst thing to happen to the game. This game and its fans needs a true rugby league man to run it. NRL is getting flogged by the AFL and soccer in TV ratings and kids signing up,which is a shame as it is a far better game. Ken Arthurson had the fans at the forefront of his thinking,we need another like him.

I read today the greatest Manly player of all time (IMO) Steve Menzies has 100% thrown his support behind Willie Mason and says he could be the man to keep Manly at the top. I rate the 'beaver' very highly and value his thoughts on the game. He also gave big wraps on Peta Hiku which after a brilliant four nations for NZ is a very good signing for Manly. I have been hearing a few whispers about the Dragons being a much different team next season, with the players really believing in what the coach is doing.

Two great players. My wife is a rusted on Manly supporter, having been born & raised at Manly. Her nephew played league with Cliffy Lyons in the 2nd Div. comp, when he retired from the NRL.. When told about how big a fan she was, Lyons passed on his playing registration card when he gave the lower div. away, and it resides with Bobby Fultons jumper from the 1973 season, framed with the official program inside. Not sure how she scored that, but her Dad was postmaster at Dee Why, and her uncle was a First Grade linesman[ biggest claim to fame was getting Malcolm Reilly sent off] And me a Broncos supporter.
