Hi guys,
has anyone had any experience with this intercooler? The reduced price makes it rather tempting.

looks very similar to the ones Jase? did some years ago, certainly gets greater flow, so less restriction, and hopefully better cooling. I did mine a few years ago, think it made a difference ....

I just bought one off Jase. It wasnt that cheap though. He might still have a couple left.
at least I know the ones Jase made have worked well and are lasting.

Cheers
Michael.

Thanks guys I'll get in touch with Jase. I found a few more on ebay that look identical ranging in price from $299 to $399. Then there are the Allisports at twice the price. Are they that much better?

I have an Allisport one, got it a couple years back when the dollar was better - it does make a difference. My standard one was cracked in a couple of places and unrepairable (or not worth trying), at the time a new standard one wasn't much less than Allisport - but if the one Discopete found was around for the price I would have got one, looks OK.

I'm pretty sure Jase doesn't import them anymore. I bought his last one off the guy he sold it to but hadn't got around to fitting it.

I'm in the same boat needing an uprated cooler but think they're overpriced for a specific D1 fit (like Allisport etc.)

I plan on removing the grille and fitting the biggest generic front mount that'll fit, and hacking up a spare grill to finish it off.

I found a few threads elsewhere that use universal ic's... even on ebay you can find one sided ic's that i wonder would fit. Too much $$ for a risk :(

The universals are half the price of an LR specific IC so not really a gamble, i'm also looking at IC's and will probably go universal front mount but the ones on ebay listed earlier are tempting.

Comparing the overall size of the universal to alisport etc you should be able to get it to fit.
I was looking at it, then got lazy and got an allard ic. :banghead:

You can go a little wider but not any taller, i lost my secondary bonnet lock because it hits the intercooler. The 45* angles at the bottom of the specific ic's is so that the bottom fits in between the chassis rails, the generic ones i saw were square corners.

To go thicker (i fitted oil coolers, for the engine and hydraulic winch, between ic and grille) i gutted the grille and fitted generic mesh in place of the plastic mesh. Looks horrid, amateur job, but better air flow to keep that crappy little engine going a bit longer :p

The other issue was that most of the generics i saw had 3" inlet/outlet (lr 2 1/2?) But not hard to overcome, could be tricky in limited space tho.

Worth a try. Save a fair bit of $

Send me a pm for pics or measurements if i can be a help to anybody with the guts to give it a try.

Pics are required, without saying :D

This is what I was thinking off... ebay intercooler (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TOG-BAR-PLATE-600X300X76-FMIC-INTERCOOLER-SAME-SIDE-IN-OUT-UNIVERSAL-/181187204946?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item2a2f995752)

Note the 1 side, and i have seen threads where this size can fit, although some work is required obviously. Not sure if you can retain standard grill either.

I want to keep my grille so spacing it out might work or look stupid - its a fine line.

Thats the same one i was looking at, well actually the black version.

Thickness. 55mm alisport 75mm ebay should fit.
All up i have a 55mm thick allard ic and 55mm thick oil coolers 110mm total. What i had to trim off the grill was the rearward jutting bits. The flat face clears the oil coolers so your generic ic shouldnt need any trimming of the grill.

Height would be very close. 320 ali v 300 generic. The clearance between the bottom of the bonnet lock to the chassis rail is the issue, the alisport drops between the chassis rails, (hence the 2 tabs pointing up at the top, mounting point and setting clearance for bonnet lock), generic will not be able to. It would be easy if you went to race style bonnet pins, then the ic can be up as high as possible.

If you space it forward you will have to muck with the headlight surrounds, and indicator mounts and even more headaches where it meshes with the bullbar - i couldnt be stuffed, would look good to see it done tho.

Pics. I did take some during install, lost when my phone crashed.
I should be putting the head back on this weekend, if machinist is able to cut valve seats for me by then. Will take pics then.

I managed to snap a couple of quick pics of the IC/Oil Cooler setup, not much to see as it is quite cramped in there.

thanks Simon. i see its the ic with the 1 side inlet/outlet configuration. how did you go about reducing the 3" outlets to 2"?

do you have pics behind the ic, or mounting points?

do you have the specs for the ic, maybe link to where you bout it or product id?

perhaps ill send you pm's if it gets more involved...

cheers,

I Got the lr specific one from allard - same as the alisport IC, just they answered my email quicker :p

A reducing elbow, if you can get the right size, should do the trick for the generic version.
