After 4 months of trying everything I could find on the internet to stop my EBC green stuff brake pads from squealing I am finally ready to give up and buy new front pads. :censored:

What pads do you recommend that make no noise and also have sufficient stopping power?

Bendix 4x4 seem like a common and satisfying choice. Are there any others I should consider?

NB: '96 110, slotted and drilled rotors.

Thanks!

I had the same problem , put bendix pads in and they are much better , but they do still squeal some times . good hard breaking seems to cure it for a while , but only temporary . Previous threads on the subject , seem to recommend genuine pads , but I have no experience with them .

I have a 1995 110 with slotted/crossed drilled front rotors with EBC green pads & mine have never made a sound, ever (had them over 4 yrs) The rears are standard pads & rotors. I cannot think why yours would be any different. Could there be a run out problem causing the noise?

Mintex are probably the worse I have used, nothing I did could stop them squealing. The Bendix pads have been OK, only seem to make a noise when dusty.

I used to repair truck trailers for TOLL and NQX with some of the newer trailers having disc brakes.. we used heat proof silicone on the back of the pads to absorb the vibration (squeeling). worked well but messy to clean up when changing to new pads.

Bendix 4wd here also and no noise, I even use them in my 'other' SUV and very happy with them

At least half my driving is on gravel , either dusty or muddy , so could be my main problem . I have noticed that the old pads I have removed rust very quickly , dust or rust certainly must take it's toll .

This is the first time I have fitted Lucas TRW and also the first time my rears haven't squealed when full of dust.

However that was the only time they ever squealed.

Run out is the variation the disk has from running true, ie. side to side wobble as it turns.

Sure the noise is not from the rear? That's where they normally have problems

I'm not even sure any more. I took it for a long drive last night to try and figure out which wheel it was coming for. Prior to last night I was sure it was the front right but now it sounds like it could be the rear left or front left... I checked the back right and it looked okay.

I clamp the rear hose off and go or a carefull drive to diagnose problems like this but but with out proper brake hose clamps that will be difficult

Have you tried beveling the pads?

You can use a file and it must be done on both ends. Make sure to wear an air mask, the dust is not good for your lungs.

EBC pads are bevelled, they also have instructions on the box that you need to follow to stop them squealing. Pat

I use Bendix 4x4. They've been in 3 years now. Never had a problem.

Cheers all

Hi guys the only way to stop them squealing is to clean and lubricate the caliper where the pad is in contact with it. use a product like cera-tec, .Make sure you machine or change your discs. As far as pads go I run Mintex as a pommy pad for a pommy car works for me :)

I have not found a pad that will not squeal on the Defender outside the original LR pads.
Mintex were the worst and squealed on all corners from day 1 even with additional backing plates, anti squeal spray and goo.
Bendix were good for a while but have started squealing. I pulled off some anti squeal backing plates and doubled up on the front with anti squeal spray on the rotors and goo. Has been better but not eliminated altogether.
If you want to try Mintex I think I still have a full set in the shed, not sure if they have the backing plates though and are for a 110 if the same.

Hi folks, just on a side note re brakes, when I was traveling & towing a large van behind my D2 the brakes struggled with the weight & heat build up.

So I bought a set of vented, cross drilled & slotted discs from MR Auto in Redcliffe for the front only.

These improved the bight, feel & fade resistance quite a bit on the D2 & they have worn well, a mate still has my old car & going strong.

So have any of us fitted these to there Defender & what do you think?

My 110 MY11 lacks the bight that I like. I would approach MR Auto again but I think the freight of a set of four to Sydney would be cost prohibitive.

I would appreciate any thoughts or experience.
Regards Chris.

Not on the Defender yet but I fitted Cross drilled and slotted discs on my RRC to all 4 wheels when I had it and it made a lot of difference. When I can afford it will be doing the Defender.

I'm sick of my pads squealing on my D2a I'm going to try Akebono ceramic pads next time, apparently less noise and dust. See link Disc Brake PAD Euro Ultra Premium Ceramic Pads Rear Front Akebono EUR493 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/151333730977'ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649)

I had a similar problem with my brake pads. I ended up getting the discs machined and the problem went away. The guy at the mechanics seemed to think that it is normal if you have worn discs?

i always used genuine pads on my D2's,never had an issue,no squeal at all.
And they were similar price to aftermarket.
