View Full Version : tidy up of a '56 swb called 'phantom'

well........ after being roverless for the first time in just over 20 years, much to the wifes amusement (groans like marg simpson) i won a 1956 s1 on ebay[bigwhistle]
it was 3 weeks after all.....
The second best part of this story involves a chat with JC who put me onto wrinkle arthur who had already looked at my new ride.
A phone call and verbal handshake later (alright there was enough landy talk to fill a new forum) the swb is at Arthurs and ill be carrying his books to school for quite a while:D
He has been given the name phantom because i haven't even seen him yet.
Short term plan is driveable with brakes for the trip across the pond then i get to scrape my knuckles on him.
i'll be after some seats, gauges and eventually a soft top.
there is a set of 93 deefer wheels with 7.50's to go on and ill have to replace a heap of other stuff that will break once i get my paws on it.
Hopefully someone will post photos of the task at hand for the amusement of others.

I assume as you are calling it the Phantom,
its a KIT car!!    :)

It was too early when I read your post digger!
First I thought kit car as in replica (ac cobra etc...)
Then I thought trans am type from the night rider
Finally I found a gear and realized kit from the phantom comic book series
Oh... it will just be phantom
The only object that gets a prefix in my house is 'the' cat
She only listens when you talk to her in the third person

I have been eyeing off a pair of front hubs on one of the wrecks that I have in the jungle of my back yard, they are the same studs as the ones that are supposed to be on the ? 'Phantom'.
Now to get a photo from my camera to this computer.  :whistling:

Had a visitor and his wife call in to my place from Victoria, they where especially interested in The Phantom.
I now have a new waterpump and a container of coolant to replace the faulty pump, that will allow me to be able to move The Phantom to where I can work on it out of the wind.
Oh those photo's, must do that soon!

The spare parts man has delivered the wrong pump !!! 
I needed the pump for and ordered, a pump to suit the red 186 engine, but the pump I received, is meant for a blue motor with it's overall length too long and where the pulley and fan sits, the flange too wide. :mad:
To get the pump out, I had to remove the radiator to get the bolts out of the fan and the hose clips didn't want to play at all, but in the end all bar one undid and the side cutters finished that problem clamp. 
After removing the radiator, I found it does need some remedial work done, as both the side straps have parted company with the bottom tank and the inside of the core has a lot rust deposited in it.
Then there were the fan bolts to fix up, they were all lengths, which would lead to a imbalance, so I went  on the hunt for some more suitable bolts of the same length and again after spending a heap of time looking I found a batch that only needed a wire wheel brushing to clean them up, so they are now all greased up and ready for the next new pump to arrive.
I'll be on the phone again in the morning to the spare parts bloke and reordering the correct one. I doubt very much after coating the mounting surface with gasket cement and having the bolts nipped up with split washers, the first pump would not be accepted back as a unused, returned item. Not happy Jan!

Update the previous posting, the pump supplied ( WP726RP ) would have been correct for a 186 Holden engine in that year's Holden.
Needed for this Holden engine converted Land Rover however, was the pump for the earliest Holden Red Motor the 149 - 179. 
The differences are, some as I stated in the previous post, is the shaft diameter, overall length being shorter and the smaller outside diameter, with hole placement of the fan hub also being smaller.

A few corrections as seen in the daylight, as I don't have the edit function on this thread for some reason.
Update the previous posting, the pump supplied ( WP726RP ) would have been correct for a 186 Holden engine in that year's Holden.
Needed for this Holden engine converted Land Rover however, was the pump ( GMB, WP587 GWHD-02A ) for the earliest Holden Red Motor the 149 - 179. 
The differences are the smaller fan hub diameter,and the hole placement of the fan hub also being smaller radius, more importantly, the overall length is same.

Sorry if I caused copious amounts of confusion, when really all I had to do was change to a later red motor pulley and fan, but where are they when you want them? .
Anyway, the new, dearer! version of pump ( GMB, WP587 GWHD-02A ) is in and the new fan belt ( Gates, 11A0890 ) is aligned nicely.
Now the next job is to clean up and resolder the solder patches on the side straps of the radiator.

Oh dear! The radiator looks like it has a terminal condition and it's no longer capable of holding it's water.  So I am now on the hunt for another to replace it.
