Hi,
I currently have a 94 Disco. I want to sell it and buy a diesel. Can anyone please tell me what's the difference between the TDI and TD5 engines?
I am changing mostly for fuel economy and am looking at a 2001 TD5 with 49,000 km's on the clock. As my old one has nearly 200k on her and is going well I'm assuming I'll get years out of the new diesel. Is there anything I should beware of when checking out the proposed new Disco?
Thanks for any advice.
Regards
Martin

Technically there is all sorts of differences. the TD5 is a 2.5 litre bmw sourced, 5 cylinder turbodiesel engine.
the TDI is only a 4 cylinder and although advanced for the time, is relatively simple compated to the TD5.
I'm afraid I can't tell you much more than that other than the TD5 is more powerfull, smoother, quieter etc etc.

I love my TDI but there is alot to be said for the TD5, both are great cars and engines in there own right. I think if you have the $$$ buy the TD5 it easy to get more power from a TD5 if you want it.
I guess simple put TDI old tech & TD5 current tech
( all be it for only another month or so )

Hi Martin welcome to the forum, we have just done what you are about to and i have to say it is a great car as Phoenix has said a very powerfull quiet and smooth engine and very good economy we love our Disco. Our camper is very heavy and i was very impressed with the ease the Disco tows it, i can't say enough about it, you will not regret buying one.
Baz.
Oh by the way there is no such thing as a dumb question, not asking is dumb.

Go the TD5, heaps more power and almost as good economy as the TDi

Offroad there is very little difference .. onroad is where the TD5 is a class above .. especially uphills  Fuel economy is pretty much the same .. although I would give the Tdi a slight advantage here.

One more thing that the others didnt mention martinoz, is the TDi is not as reliant on technology and computers, well it isnt at all. Dont get me wrong the TD5 is great engine and had i had the money at the time i would have gotten one. But the TDi is far simpler to work on if you do alot of the work yourself. If you arent poor like me and will be taking it to a mechanic go the TD5. Matt

Thanks for that observation Matt. I do all my own servicing on the old V8 but had already reconciled myself to getting a 4wd servicing agent as I know jack about deisels.
Probably won't use a LR dealership as they charge like wounded bulls. They quoted me $1,600 + fitting for a replacement alternator on the V8 and I managed to make a Nissan one fit. Cost me $150 and it's been fine for 4 years. Sad thing was I only needed new brushes and they refused to sell them. Have to buy a new unit, yeh right !

I was like you when i bought my disco 4 or 5 months ago. I didnt know much about diesels, but they are just as easy if not easier to work on than petrols, less electrics to stuff around with for a start. I have found the TDi extremely easy to work on. Matt
