I couldn't let this opportunity pass especially with Papa Smurf's agreeing about getting it.
Chassis number: 30100192B
Gearbox number: 30000609B
Engine number: 34700080

Brief History:
Previous owner had it for about 30 years. When he bought it, it was in pieces so he spent some money getting it done up. This included Engine rebuild and gearbox and transfer. I believe the chassis got painted as well.
The owner before him put the hydraulic ram, tilt tray on it.
Apparently when the previous owner got it done it cost him about $7500 and has done bugger all since as it was used to transport some timber and saw dust around as they worked their own sawmill.

Condition:
Overall it is pretty good and straight.
I have not had a massive look over ever nook and cranny but from what I can tell there is no rust , not even surface rust in the chassis.
There is some rust in the firewall from where there was something that leaked and corroded the tray on the passenger side and part of the foot well. It isn't really a major issue as it isn't really a structural problem. I will try some rust converter and treat it as well as I can.
The engine runs quite well. When I first test drove it , it would jump out of reverse easily and the previous owner said he just lubricated things up and it worked.

What isn't original (I'm sure I missed somethings):
Bull bar
Fuel tank
Side handles on cab
Hydraulic ram
Tray
Exhaust
Free wheeling Hubs
Air filter
Fuel filter and pump
The center part where the seat is attached to that covers the engine is not original as when it was getting work done to it this part got accidentally thrown out in the scrap bin so one was made to replace it.
Most of these things are pretty easy to get rid of I guess. I would like an original tank and I need to do some more research into the setup of these rigs from the factory. I do know they varied quite a bit with how you could buy them.

What I intend on doing with it:
Get rid of those crappy steps on the wheels and put some proper side steps on
put smaller land rover rims and tyres on
get rid of the whole PTO set up together and the tray
put a flat bead alloy tray on
change the rover 6 for a Holden 6
change the gearbox and transfer to get higher gears
and finally ignore all previous said and just keep it the way it is and enjoy :)

If you have any information you can give me about this vehicle that would be excellent.
Now for some photos

We towed it behind my dads bt50 which towed it really well. Sat on 90km/h most of the way getting 15L/100km.

Very nice mate - I haven't seen a tipper like that in a loooong time. A mates Bedford had one like that - worked like a treat.

What are the plans for it? Keep it close to how it is, or something more?

Landy Smurf
17th October 2014, 08:32 PM
I am leaving it exactly the way it is. not many of these left so will be keeping it as original as possible. There might be a day when I decide to restore it so will change it more back to original as possible.
For now though this goes and is functional so will be kept and used as is while working on other land rovers :D

Was this from the clearance sale up near Walcha?

That sale is tomorrow, which I am going to.
This was on a property near Armidale.

A few questions,
Does anyone know from looking at the dash whether the 2 pullout knobs( middle left, top right) are standard and what they might do?
also the starter button is on the dash , it is the little black thing in the middle on the right of the dash. is this original or did they have the standard series push start button lower on the firewall?

What a great find Tony, I'm not 100% certain but I would suspect the switch top Right of the dash would be instrument illumination as per std S2A, the other switch, well you have had enough experience with what other people do to Land Rovers, anyway great item, looking forward (no pun intended) to seeing one day cheers mate Dennis

Well Done Tony:D
Dont chuck anything away. Those steps look like the original one and are scarce. See I had them fitted to the 6x6 at the expo. No other type of step would make it easier to get in the cab.
The special studs and nuts to hold them get lost too.
These had the all helical transfer box and the PTO to fit it is also rare.
Does this drive the hydraulics for the tipper?
The 2A gear change is a bit of a PTA but the holes the shafts slide in can be rebushed to get it working smoothly again.
I prefer the 2A gear lever position in the floor to the 2B. that sits on top of the engine box between the seats.
I can take pics of the engine cover with dimensions if you need to make one.
The tyres are 900x16 and to replace them with smaller ones would make it look crappy. The original wheels are rare now too.
I would just tidy it up and put an Isuzu 3.9 in it.
I am biased as thats what I did with mine anyway:)

Next project is build a shed and then I can do some service work to it. I want to change all hoses and check/change oil ect. The main problem is lack of brakes at the moment which is stopping me from taking it for a drive up/down the big hills.

I agree with the keep it as original as possible, these are sooooo rare in any thing close to original spec. I have looked at a couple over the years but have been too butchered tobe for my peace of mind:(

Got the forward control out on the weekend to collect firewood for the bonfire.
The wooden sides on the tray need to be renewed but still worked this time.

Update:
Starting to do a big service.
Radiator hose had a split.
Replacements were hard to find but have found both top and bottom for 40 pounds each.
Brakes were not working at all. Turns out to be the breaks are seized lucky they were not seized on though.
I have been looking at tyres. I have decided just to go a light truck tyre as they are cheaper. Around $200-$300 each. These will be one of the last items to purchase.
I have found an offroad tyre but they are $600 each and I am not willing to pay that.
The fuel pump died do borrowed one from a S3.
Radiator has been removed ready to go to a radiator shop for inspection,clean,re-coring if needed/possible.
Once the brakes are done, the next job will be suspension then the electrics.

I was wondering why he thought that too.
Its an early one with the high headlights and the photo shows the 2A gearstick through the floor and not the 2B one through the seatbox.
