Anyone have any experience with fitting a pintle hook to a new Defender with OME tow bar. The one I found in local ARB has a backing plate with for bolt holes 80mm x 40mm. I measured the for bolts above the tow bar and they are 75mm x 35mm. It looks like I have to buy there square tubed adaptor plate to go in original tow bar plus pintle hook. $92 plus $110. Any help appreciated.

I fitted a combination ball and pintle to Defender OEM square towing socket
Bought it from US many years ago. Cost less than local even with freight and 50mm ball conversion
Its mounted with 4 HT bolts as you describe to a heavy plate welded to thick wall 50mm square tube
Will try to find time to take a pic tomorrow

I just modified the stock towbar that came with my MY13 DC.
end result - not as low as before, nicely reinforced.

I put a combination 50mm tow ball (3.5t.) and pintle hook (6t.) on my 2013 DC 130. The one I used fitted a 50mm square receiver on the towbar which came with the vehicle - but the same arrangement is available with a bolt on backing plate. Both readily available on ebay. Cost about $200. Search for '50mm ball and pintle hook'
Seemed to me to be an advantage to be able to tow a conventional 50mm ball trailer as well as use a pintle hook for heavier loads on 1 towhitch. And, yes I know the defender is only legal at 3.5t. - but we have another one rated at 4t. and tow a trailer rated at 4.5 t which has to use a pintle hook.

I think I got the same as Allan off ebay. It stuck out way too far, so I got a new retaining pin hole drilled and about 2 inches chopped off the back end to get a snug fit.... not too much trouble though.

Yes Pete - that's the same as mine. Extra length was not a problem with a tray - if anything was an advantage. Did have to lengthen the safety chains on one of our trailers.

Here is a pic of the 4 bolt type ball/pintle hook combo I promised
Its been in service on a couple of Defenders and has lost its showroom look.
Its rated to 8 ton, not that you would want to.

That bit that the shackle is attached to, is that welded to the towbar or separate?
Where did you get it? Brand? Part number?

Hi Mick,
The plate with the slots for the shackles is part the optional tow bar assembly supplied by the Landrover dealer on delivery. From memory it was about $800 or $900 fitted with electric socket
PS The plate is welded to the tubular receiver
