View Full Version : Engine replacement options

Hi

Decision time soon and the options seem to be;

1) Rebuild my existing engine

2) Get a reconditioned long or short engine, possibly out of the UK

3) Get a replacement long or short engine

4) Buy another car and make a good one out of the two of them. This is the most desperate option !

Pricing will be an issue of course, so it's time to do some research

Steve, I've been following you're thread and I would firstly like to say I hope your luck changes as I feel your pain! If it were me and from what I have read over the years I think I would contact some of the overseas RRNet members and gather info on costs of engines at different stages of build with the view of shipping here.My main reason for this is it seems there a number of members who appear to be extremely knowledgeable and honest in this area. EG: leftlanetruckin, Marty NZ, Gilbertd etc.
There knowledge may be a good start........just my thoughts mate.

I dont know the story of your vehicle but if your engine can be rebuilt why waste it.
If okay why not give some thought to having Bruce Davis rebuild it as a top hatted 5.0 ltr.
Our Davis donk is a beauty and reliable.

That is certainly an option I am considering, and DPL certainly have a good reputattion.

"better the beast you know" is often the best option :p

I am sure there are plenty of excellent local engine builders but there does not seem to be the equivalent of a dedicated shop like turner engineering with items like ductile liners etc

Having said that, I am very unlikely to get a reconditioned engine from OS. If I get something from OS it would have to be with a new block at the very least

A "J.E." engine would be the ultimate, but they are not cheap, in fact they are VERY expensive, I reckon by the time you paid freight & all the other add on charges etc, the cost would be prohibitive.

And the exchange rate of late won't be helping your cause.

When I had another engine built for me last year by orger engines, total cost ended up nearly 13k. This included paying somebody to do the swap. I simply didn't have the time.

Just trying to help with the research. I never anticipated it getting that expensive, but it soon mounts up. I did renew a lot of stuff at the time. Like injectors, starter motor etc etc

I sold my original engine (a known good un at 150k) to offset the cost somewhat.
My advice would be to buy a built long engine. But from who? TRS certainly talk themselves up, but wiser men than me have offered opinions on TRS.

The UK options via Turners or V8 Tuner were very appealing, especially at better exchange rates. But even those guys demand a swap block now, due to the lack of new blocks.

You might be better off to simply get hold of another 4.6 donk out of a low kms car (crashed) and swap them. Easier said than done I know.

I hear you and the second hand donk is the way to go for now I reckon

Then I can dismantle and evaluate the existing motor and decide on a course of action.
