View Full Version : Bonnet rivets. Painted or not?

One for the rivet counters.
I have always understood that the bonnets were assembled then painted so one had to be careful not to remove the paint off the rivets when polishing.
Now a mate of mine who has recently restored a 107 SW has researched this and claims that the bonnet frame was galvenised, the bonnet skin painted then the skin was fastened to the bonnet frame. This left the rivets unpainted.
Has anyone anything to support this?
I was going to ask this on LRSOC as well but its down atm.

Dead right.
I am not into washing let alone polishing.

However I was told I had to make an exception with the Royal Review:(

I can't remember seeing them unpainted . they would have been able to get a gloss of the gun using enamel & there would have been no need to flatten . We all paint out 80's wrong they didn't leave the factory with much of a shine.
Have you got any photo's of the Royal on its first outing with plates on?

No Wayne I did not take any.
There were heaps of others about with cameras though.
I might be able to get copies.

I just had a look at my books "Landrover The Early Years " & " Origional Landrover Series 1" & the vehicles on the covers have unpainted rivets :o & looling through the black & white photo's in the early years book in some of the photo's it is hard to see but some of them look unpainted.
Looks like I will need to make up a tool to clean the paint off my rivets :( or bite the bullet & paint Landy again which needs doing & work out a way to do it with out removing the rivets & not paint them.

Yes but which rivets?

There is a thread on the Series II club website which says that rivets used to hold galvanised cappings (etc) in place were fitted after painting so were unpainted. All others were fitted before painting...

EDIT - just had a look at my books and the rivets on the door top are unpainted but the bonnet rivets are clearly painted.

The ones on the bonnet & door tops & also the twp bolts holding the door catch are unpainted on LYC207 on the front cocer of James Taylor's book.

Hi
for what it's worth
I have seen old photo's
rivets on bonnets, doors around door handles, roof holding front galv nose were put in after painting.
To get a correct answer, I suggest contacting Mike Bishop in UK, Mike is a font of knowledge
cheers

Thanks Ian.
Looking at John Taylors 107 SW photo on page 14. The bonnet rivets look the same as the door and roof nose rivets so are unpainted.

I asked this question on LRSOC and Mike Bishop replied " All painted, assembled then painted, with slight overspray on the underside around the edges."

So contradicting statement.

This may only apply to Wagon bonnets and fittings however we wanted to know if all other 86", 88", 107", and 109 bonnets should be the same.

Every original S1 I have inspected supports what Mike stated, painted over rivets but not painted underneath just overspray, even on an original where all the paint has worn off if you look around the base of the rivets you will see paint. Unpainted rivets on doors as panels painted before fitment.
