Hi all.
Had one of the welch plugs in the head give way and fill the
sump with coolant.
Have removed the head and striped it, have the new screw in
plugs, would like to buy a 1" 16tpi tap to clean the threads in
the head. trouble is no industrial stores in N/E Vic can help me.
I have a thread file as a plan B if i can not get a tap.
Any ideas welcome thanks.

Long shot, but this shop in Sydney has lots of stuff the others don't have. As well as new stuff, they go to auctions and buy up old stock. The main thing is they are organised, don't just have piles of unidentified mystery goods. A phone call will get you an answer straight away. Might be worth it. They do have a lot of taps & dies.

If you dont have any luck, give Graham McDonald Services a call (NSW) they have never let me down and can supply just about any tap/die/drill known to man:)

Try to borrow a tap from an electrical contractor. I vaguely remember that it's 1" conduit. .W.

1" British Standard Conduit.
They usually clean up well with a thread file.

Idea: Use any smaller 16 TPI Whitworth tap as a thread file.
Actually I did that on a Land Rover once (in 1975!) , and remember wishing I had the right sized tap. It did the job, laboriously.

Aren't they meant to be aluminium, to act as the sacrificial anode?

if you want to use an anode, your way better off using zinc, and, it is much easier to use an zinc/alloy plug in the 1"npt block heater entry point, which is on the same side of the block, same part of the water jacket and wayyyy easier to get at and replace imho, not to mention way easier to source.
is what i have done with mine without any issues...
and you only have to carry one spare...

Thanks all, slowly cleaning up with thread file, will chase up on a tap.
Work is getting in the way at the moment.
Dave those plugs also fit in the top of the head also do they,
look the same. While i have the head off i'll check the ones in
the side of the block, may as well replace them now if needed..
