To free up the aux power socket on the dash console I have installed a double USB 5V socket in the passenger side "glovebox" on my 2012 Defender. Mainly to power a GPS and charge iphones

I chose this location as its out of the way and mounted through the side of fascia and and is clear of other wiring or controls. I used the escutchion plate on the outlet as a template to safely cut the holes

I picked up the 12V supply at the back of the aux (cig lighter) This required removing the radio head and lifting the control panel to get access and run the wires panel. I used 4 pieces of fence wire to release the radio and then removed the two torx screws and pop the control panel out bottom first You can also get a hand in after removing the hatch under the glovebox.

Took less than an hour.

Looks good.
I took the lazy way out and just bought a Narva unit with a cigarette and USB plug, plugged it into the standard outlet and screwed it in place.

Excuse my ignorance, but did you just tap into the existing wires on the back of the cig lighter, or have to run additional power/relays etc to the new socket too?
Is it REALLY that simple?:unsure:

Cheers.

The 5V reg electronics is integral to the socket. The unit is rated at 2.1A so I simply spliced it in parallel with the cig socket 12V supply. Easy

I did solder the splice and insulated it with Scotch 23 tape.

Great job very neat.
Might have to borrow that idea.
