hi, i recently bought a 70 s2a running a 202, it has a temp gauge that sits around 140c which climbs to 180c in stop start traffic.
This seems pretty hot to me...

Oil pressure is at 20psi, but this drops to around 10psi when hot (180c) at the lights, but goes up when i pull away.

I will be installling a thermo fan, and have seen a replacement 7 blade mechanical fan in plastic to get rid of the crappy 4 blade metal fan, as it gets hot here and traffic can be a killer sometimes.

Is my pressure ok? ive seen on a torana forum they said it should be at 40psi?

If not what could be causing it to run this low?

Ive been so busy getting it road legal and just now have time to turn my attention to the engine. which needs a spruce up.

Sounds like your temp gauge is not working properly or the engine would be cooked by now. It should run between low 80's to low 90's depending on ambient temp and load. If you know someone with an infrared non contact thermometer, you can check this to see what it is actually running at. Is the temp gauge electric or mechanical? If it's electric, you may have the wrong sender, or some crook wiring.

Oil pressure on these can get low as the oil pump wears and the clearances open up. A new pump is a worthwhile investment and easy to do. Again, check to make sure your gauge is installed properly and you actually have low oil pressure.

All the best.

it's mechanical, think one of the repco/supercheap jobs.

cool, I'll have a look at changing the pump.

can you also test the thermometer via putting the sender in boiling water, that's how I've tested thermostats in the past. to make sure they were opening.

ok, numpty moment..

it is a Fahrenheit gauge, which I noticed having a proper look, so this means it's running around 50c, then goes up to 82c when stopped on a big run... still doesn't sound right though.

one of my bmws used to run at 100-110 normal operating temp.

Workshop manual says oil pressure hot is 45 psi. Thermostat starts to open 177 degrees F. and fully open 202 degrees F. Radiator cap is 13psi.

Ah, ok, that sounds better. It sounds like it the thermostat may be stuffed if it's not heating up until loaded. I'd just bang a new one in - for the price, I wouldn't worry too much about testing it.

If you have no A/C,and not an auto, the four blade fan should be fine, unless the rad needs a good roding,or the fins are badly corroded.

Also do you have the correct grade engine oil,as this could affect the oil pressure, although i bet the pump is worn.

Yep thermometer bulb in boiling water will give you a good indication of it's calibration.

cheers.

ill grab a new thermostat tomorrow, i see the recommended tridon one is the same as a landrover unit. anyone used the tt2000-180?
30% more coolant flow than oem style?

10psi oil pressure at a hot idle is fine. It would want to be at 35psi or above when at 2000rpm though.

202s run very low oil pressure at idle, I had several heart attacks worrying about mine until I found out it was ok. I ran a V8 1 Tonner fan and it improved cooling.

Holden workshop manual for the early reds states that the oil light flickering at idle is normal.
Standard Temp for the Holden reds over this way was pretty much 180F (82C). The higher flow Trident thermostats are good but if you are a bit worried about it heating up when you are in traffic etc maybe start off with a 160F or 170F. I am not sure what your maximum ambient temps get to but mid forties are not uncommon here in summer, so I run a high flow 160 in my vehicle (Land Rover with a Holden engine). The other thing that will help is to wire your electric fan so that it will also cut in when you have your foot on the brake, that way you will keep the temp down from the start when you are in traffic.

Cheers, Mick.

I Installed a 10" thermo fan on my brothers S2a with a red conversion connected to a temp sensor, and I am going to be installing a Davis Craig thermo fan on mine when I get it back together. If you are going to use your landy on the beach, a thermo fan will help keep the temps down in the soft sand.

My fan setup.
One pushing from the front (14") two pulling (10") but at present only one of these connected as two have proven to be sufficient. The third can be connected if the need arises...extreme hot weather or heavy towing.

so..

found the problem, there was no thermostat at all, the surfaces were very gunked up, and a bit of corrosion. I gave it a wire brush and sand, it will need a good flush at some point.

landy is running sweet, and now sits at a more respectable 85c

Good to see it was a nice easy fix. :)

just hope it doesn't bring any gremlins out now it's running a bit warmer than it has been
