View Full Version : How much leaking oil is too much?

I'm new to Land rovers, and 4wd's... But seeking opinions on whether I should follow this up before it deteriorates any further. Vehicle has factory warranty.

Photos show the gearbox bellhousing and electrical cable (and perhaps clutch hydraulic line) which is in the passenger side of a 2012 defender.

It's a little more oil than I'd like to see under a vehicle with 23,000 Km on it. Is it a Land rover thing?

Any ideas what might be the source of said leak? Rear main? or is there an oil pressure sensor or oil cooler lines on the passenger side of the 2.2 TDCI engine?

Sorry, but what I'm doing really irritates me, that is, answering a question with a question.

Would it pass a vehicle roadworthy inspection in your state?

If the answer to that is NO, then you have your answer and as it is still in warranty I believe you should get it fixed.

It does not seem an overly bad leak and the old girls are renown for marking their territory, does it drip off and onto the floor or driveway?

I can't say anything directly about the motor as I have never worked on one.

Mike

Yes, it would pass a roadie (pink slip in NSW)... unless you get a douchebag of an inspector :o

Not dripping as such, but there is enough to oil soak over components and be blown back along the gearbox.

Thinking about it, if the engine has some kind of PCV system, could be as basic as a loose vac hose or similar. Just spitballing though...

It's not a LR thing - my Puma gearbox has never had any oil on the outside of it - get it fixed under warranty without question.

Does it smell like gear oil or engine oil?

I wouldn't hesitate to take it back to the dealer. no question.

No distinct smell, but it's black, so usually that means engine oil in my book.

There's some cabling in some split tube which runs above the starter motor which is oil soaked, so looks like its originating above that level.

I'd love if my Landy only leaked that much :D. I agree though, new cars shouldn't leak oil. But it doesn't look to serious. I think some people get pretty uptight about small oil leaks on older rigs but I'd get it done under warranty if it were mine. If it was 5 years older I'd call it an anti rust dispenser and just ignore it til it gets bad.

If it was mine it'll be straight back to the dealer. Pat

That's a classic. I'm going to use that one :D

Cheers for the input chaps, Might make a not of this with the next service.

Hi Toxic,

My 2013 2.2 recently developed a small leak from the bottom of the bell housing. As it was under warranty, I took it back and it ended up being the rear main seal.

Dealer had the vehicle for about 3 days.

If you have the warranty, I would certainly get it fixed. Get a small leak fixed before it becomes a larger problem :)

cheers,

Wayne

Any leak is a bad leak get it fixed especially if under warranty one less thing to have to worry about plus they make a **** of a mess flicking oil and crap everywhere. My td5 had rocker cover leak, engine sump and transfer box inspection plate leaking 2 new gaskets and a tube of worth rtv I no long leave my mark and dont have to keep checking my oil...

Old bloke from the landrover parts place that i got the gaskets from laughed and said only landrovers that dont leak oil are ones that have run out but so far so good proving him wrong for now haha:p

Some have taken their Land Rovers back for warranty repair when they have been trivial problems.

Your oil leak may only need a slight tighten of a component, a degrease and wash down.

Thread Dig!

Turns out it was a leak at the 'cam box' aka rocker cover.

As previously mentioned...

I get customers Defenders TDCi (Puma) in all the time, none are as bad as that.

Its got a warranty, hammer them to sort it out.

One thing on a Defender puma gearbox, if its over filled they are prone to leaking from the front/rear main seal on the box.

My front diff rear seal leaks a tiny bit. Has done since the last service. I've put it down to possible over filling and shuffled it of to the back of my mind. Every now and then though I look at it and wonder. It does niggle a bit.
