Hi guys

I posted in the tec section a few days ago with no luck.

Im considering a defender with the international 2.8 tgv engine in it.

I am wondering if any of the members from this forum have any experience or knowledge of just how reliable these engines have been?

I spent a lot of time researching on the forum and others and found mixed reports.

I trust the owners word on the condition of the car as its nearly 2000 kms from me but i will of course fly there and check it out for myself and hopefully drive it home.

What im not as sure about is the longevity of this engine. Im hoping based off the 300tdi and still using various parts from the 300 such as head and sump that I should expect it to be much like a 300tdi in longevity, maintenance and fuel consumption. I know the crank and rods are stronger as the are forged. But what about the rest?

Am I wrong?

Many thanks.
Michael.

Hi Michael, have you had a read of this thread: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/137803-hs-2-8l-tgv-any-opinions.html

There are 7 pages of info there, and a few other 2.8 threads on here as well.

Hi David

Yes ive read that thread a couple times. Thank you anyway. Much appreciated.
I guess my main uncertainty is how reliable these engines are. I know theres a few members that have fitted them however are they still going strong and is the economy good. Also is the maintenance much the same as a 300tdi?
Im really interested in finding out.

Regards
Michael.
