Does anyone have any actual knowldge about this?
Land Rover haven't mentioned it but Ford have repeatedly talked about it in their Transits.

Surely the Defender version would have the same oil pump.

I was thinking it would be great for adding a centrifuge or bypass filter as it would adjust oil flow to maintain a set pressure!

There has been a few issues with the variable flow oil pumps (some breaking up and spreading metal through the engines) in some vehicles.

There is also other issues with priming these engines after changing the oil....
Not only the 5 Cylinder version of the Ford/Mazda engines,
But also the smaller TDCi variants too.

Thanks Mike

An oil pump not being able to self prime is a pretty fatal design flaw.

I do like the concept of it responding to engine load though.

They certainly buggered up the design and engineering for the oil pump, didn't they....

I agree with you with regards to engine loading and the ability to increase the oil pressure higher under load.

It seems to be that the "ingenium" engines also have this variable oil pressure pump (connected to the ECU), so perhaps we will see it in the "new" Defender?

What centrifuge would you be considering?
I'd like to research that idea too.

Like the 3.5 V8 Rover motor

That was easy to prevent though - only a problem with both sump empty AND oil filter off/empty.

never had any problems over 400000km+ of ownership

Purely academic at this stage. But.
Id most likely go with Mann+Hummel, either FM016 (I think same as in the TD5) or FM025.

The FM025 uses a cleanable, reusable rotor which I like. But its larger and requires greater oil flow to operate. I also dont know if its even possible to fit one to a puma engine or if the oil pump has the reserve flow capacity to operate one.

Maybe using an oversized, high efficiency, synthetic media, full flow filter would be easier, cheaper and just as effective these days...?

Comparing grapes and watermelons here, but in ship engines, they never change the oil...they centrifuge it.
