Hi folks
Just a quick one. On my D1 I have the mirrors that clip on the window sill and the bottom of the door.
What are people using on D4's?

Cheers Mossy

I use Milenco Aero, simple and work well.

If you are going to be traveling on 2 lane roads with large vehicles coming the other way at speed, use something additional to retain the Aero's on the D4 mirrors. ( a colour coded fabric tape seems to do the trick- since ) My drivers side lasted all of 200 odd klms before hitting the deck. Roadtrains can generate a massive wind blast.

Hi Mowog,

A question if you don't mind, you have had no issues with B-Doubles or Semi's blowing / sucking them off on two lane roads like most of the Pacific Hwy or the New England?

I also use those and are OK for the price (they are a little small) but be aware that they will pull the glass out of your mirror if something hits them - I recently did some offroad work in my RRS with them on Iforgot to take them off) and the drivers side got hit by a branch - the suction cap is very good so it also pulled the glass out.

As the whole thing was covered in mud it was not until I got back to camp that I could wash the mud off and refit the glass - none of the clips were damaged but I suspect they would not survive too many removals.

On the road they seemed fine - as in the bush if the suction caps are turned up tight it will not be the mirror coming off but the glass in the vehicles mirror coming off.

They do vibrate a little but is OK - but that is the mirror in the car rear vision mirror moving.

They are great value for the money and fine if you know how to use them. I would rather have the cars external mirror pop off than possible door damage with one of those mirrors that strap to the door.

Mossy, you could go top shelf with clearview mirrors. D4 ones just came out.

Lost of caravaners use them these days, but they ain't cheap...about $700.

Er, no thanks, I've ordered a set of Milenco Aero 2 mirrors.
Though for the price, a set of Camec suction mirrors might be worthwhile to keep in the van as back up.

Good luck with the Milenco mirrors. I've had 2 sets, both the standard ones and the Aeros. Both sets fell off at various times and bounced down the highway. Fortunately they weren't damaged when retrieved.

I also had a set of the Camec suction ones. Again, they fell off a couple of times. But the biggest problem with these is that they're too small.

But the biggest bugbear I have with these clip/attach on mirrors is the vibration. To be honest they shake so much I find (found) them next to useless when towing.

I checked out Clearview and they hadn't finalised their mirrors for the D4. However, I volunteered my car as a donor vehicle and went to 2 fittings. When I drove with the prototypes down the Hume Hwy it was like a breath of fresh air.

Unforunately, I've now sold my Disco. However, I just went to Clearview today to get mirrors fitted to my new rig - a Ford Ranger (yeah, I know, a come down but there were personal reasons for the change).

Anyhow, Clearview are looking for a new test vehicle. You get a discount on the product if you have a donor vehicle. If you live around Craigieburn in Melbourne it might be worth your while to donor your vehicle (call Dion at ClearView on 8351 9933).

And, apart from being a customer I have no connection with Clearview - I just love their mirrors (pricey but worth it when towing). The only downside is that you lose some functionality such as the folding in and puddle lights.

If the Clearviews are permanent and don't allow the mirrors to fold then I wouldn't be able to get the D4 into the garage anymore, and it will be going in and out the garage a hell of a lot more than it will tow a van.

At least they don't go bouncing down the road if you have the safety restraints connected.

They're not "fixed" - they can be manually pushed into a folded position. They don't have a motor that folds them when you lock up, or vice versa. Having said that they do seem larger than oem mirrors so even folded up you may have an issue in the garage.

Also they have an extended and a normal position. Normal position is used when you are not towing. When you want to tow you pull the mirrors out into an extended position just as if you attach towing mirrors. What is really good is that they have two mirrors on each side. The top one is connected to the mirror switching and can be adjusted from inside the vehicle. This saved me a lot of arguments with SWMBO who got snakey with me each time I need the passenger side adjusted. They also have a smaller wide-view mirror at the bottom which is great for a better view of traffic in adjacent lanes. They do need to be manually adjusted.

They did bang on the paintwork on the door though.

I've had the ORA for a little while and they folded in with the slightest breeze, even with the support arm thing to stop it doing that.
Recently changed to the Milencos Grand Aero and drove 7000km without taking them off (or falling off) including on Meerenie Loop Road, Binns Track etc. More than happy with them.

Mossy,

I have been using the Milenco Aero 2 Mirrors for the 3 years I have owned my D4.

I know some members have had issues with these.
I have done a number of trips including a quick trip to Central Australia last June/July. I was travelling at the speed limits with many road trains etc passing the opposite direction and a variety of dirt roads and my Aero 2 Mirror's did not move.
I am more then happy with the Milenco Aero 2 Mirrors.

Go to somewhere like Qld. Diesel Spares and get a pair of small West Coast mirrors. Problem solved permanently.

X2.. 25,000km around 3/4 of Australia towing a 20 foot van and the Milenco mirrors never fell off or folded. I remember on the Nullarbor there were several trucks heading the opposite way that shock the car as they passed because of the amount of wind they carried with them. I do the mirrors up tight and retighten/check them every few days.

Passed a D4 with the suction mirrors on the way from Ballarat to Melb Wednesday.

He wasn't happy as it pulled off and thumped against the door!

Mirror assemblies / motors really aren't made for that extra force...

Look at genuine from the UK... They're fair price...

I bought basic ORA ones with a single strap from top to bottom. Very average. Used them only once. I'll need some now.

I had a look at the Clearview mirrors at the 4WD show on Friday.

They are bloody huge ............ don't think I'll be going down that path. Might look OK on an F150 though. ;)

hi NTB
how do you get the clips to tighten on the mirror? My mirrors 2014 D4 have an angle on them which makes the mirror slide off when i tighten it. Tried a few types whilst in Brisbane this weekend with not much luck.

Brunsgaard 4 point mirrors work well and fit securely. They work on my current RRS 2014 which has a similar mirror surround shape as the current D4. Kel from brunsgaard in perth is very helpful. The Milenco falcon mirrors dont even make it out of the garage they just wind off as you tighten the clamps.

thanks for the photos, 2014 has a curved top edge and is chamfered in towards actual mirror glass.

I have used Milenco Aero on a D3 and now a 2011 RRS for 4 years with no issues whatsoever. Travelled 100,00kms with the van in that time, so they are excellent.

I am new to the forum and have a current model D4 MY15.

Does anyone have suggestions for appropriate caravan towing mirrors for this model?

Also, any ideas as to the price of the genuine extension towing mirror VPLVT0080?

From my experience the camec suction mirrors work, sort of. They don't really offer much of a field of view. But they are cheap and better than nothing. I tried Milenco falcon mirrors which are supposed to fit to the current D4 and 2014 RRS but I can't get them to stay on just parked in the shed, they just wind off as I tighten the thumb screws. So I went with Brunsgaard and after a bit of farting about getting the little tongue thing that hooks to the outside inner edge to be the correct shape bobs your uncle. Excellent, actually better than excellent service from Brunsgaard Perth, fully recommended.

We have just changed to a MY15 Disco4 and have to revisit towing mirrors because the ones we used on our Disco3 are not going to suit the mirrors on the new car. Have you noticed if the screw down pressure pad marks the paint on the back of the Disco mirrors?

We've got the Milenco Aero's with the new clamp pads. Only done one trip so far but felt secure and didn't loosen over the trip. I believe if you've got Milenco's already you can just buy the pads for $15.

Mirrors plus pads cost us $140 from a local shop in Perth.

No marks at all so far from the pads on the brunsgaard. Maybe if you take the mirrors on and off over dirty and bug covered mirror housings they could mark over time.
