How much does a key blank cost? If you go to a Brisbane dealer it's $320. Then they can't programme it to start the car.

Who can programme a new key if a dealer can't?

The plot thickens; after tilt traying the car to the dealer, the dealer has demanded $320 before they release the car to be tilt trayed away as the dealer can't fix it. A short time later the service department phones back and said one of their technicians wants to buy the car. Seems sus to me.

Yeh sounds kind of strange Ian.

So, what do they claim to have done for $320 apart from supply a blank key that doesn't work? What was the issue that got it tilt trayed to the Dealer - lost key?

Yes, lost key. They have cut the blank and can now unlock the doors, but the dealer is unable to code the key to the computer.

Usual deal is they would need to order a key from OS once ownership is proved, most Euro manufacturers keys can't be coded locally to the best if my knowledge. Have they said what they need to do to get it running? Surely they must know?

They had the blank in stock. The chassis (VIN) is the gateway into various modules.
I have spoken to a Volvo tech of 20 years standing, at another dealership, who brooked the possibility of a replaced module (2nd hand), which would need the ch# from the original. There are ways around this, but they're not in the Volvo how to do instructions.

Hope you get it sorted without the Dealer bull****ting you too much.

Latest development; the "technician" who wants the car has offered to clear the bill and $50 cash. It's a tidy example with four new premium tyres, a new premium battery and five months rego!

Let me get this right... You've paid $320 for them to provide a key-blank, cut it to suit your doors & IGN, and code it to/with your car's computer.

The full fee for service has not been earned..., therefore there is no need for full value to be exchanged on the basis it was offered. (You pay us money, we'll make the car go) They failed to discharge their side of the contract.

If you accept the part-contract, I'd say you're liable for the cost of the blank, and the cutting operation.

But now they will bear the loss of $320 AND pay you $50 if you cede ownership of this in-operative piece of scrap...which cannot be made to go.

Why the change of heart ? - I would ask...

Cut to the chase,,,there's something rotten in the State of Denmark... or Stockholm.

I spoke to the manager today, my first direct contact, and they have dropped the price to $150, supposedly the cost of the blank plus cutting. They're saying that there is an issue with the immobilizer module. Does any one know if this is part of, or separate to the ignition module on a '97 V70 Volvo?

The 97 V70 runs a transponder chip in the key fob like a lot of newer cars. This interacts with the immobiliser antenna ring located just behind the barrel, which runs to the immobiliser itself. I believe it is a separate unit to the ignition module, but unless the immobiliser can be bypassed (I'll go and have a google...) you will need the correctly programmed transponder chip to go back in your key fob.

Is yours the petrol or diesel? Looks like they run not only different ECU's, but completely different brands. Siemens or Bosch.

Edit - looks like the immobiliser is part of the main ECU. I would have thought the dealer could order a new key from the Manufacturer.

Gav, this one is a five cylinder petrol. The only key that we've ever had looked like a spare, very small head.
