half shaft removal

hi all
I look forward to meeting everyone and will shortly be beginning a thread on my (very slow) restoration of a 1955 86", but a quick question for now - what tool do i use to (or how do i) remove the large nut that keeps the half shaft in place ?
(I've done it for one side, but the other is too tight for the tool i have)

I presume you mean the bearing nuts. The usual tool is a tube spanner, available from any Landrover, Jeep or Landcruiser specialist, but it looks like the last owner of that used a hammer and chisel, and he would not have been the first one to do so, although a flat ended punch is probably better.

Yes, a previous owner bashed it alright !!

Land Vehicle Spares in Silverdale is the one that comes to mind, but have a look at 'recommended suppliers' in this forum.

Just so there is no confusion. If this is a rear axle, the halfshaft should pull out. The nut is for the hub bearings and to remove the hub.

The nut is 2-1/16" which is the same for all earlier Jeeps as well. Should be able to get it at a normal 4WD accessory store.

I'm currently working on the front axle, this nut holds the front hub assembly on (i was sloppy with my words), and this happens to be a 2 inch nut.

Rear is to come (and whilst i haven't looked at it yet, i'm assuming mine is a semi-floating shaft … so will do as you say). To advise !!
(ps please tell me if i'm off-track ..!)

well ... about 3 weeks later ... success

Started off with a tool i found in a sailing shop. That worked with one side.
But the other side was too stubborn.

Purchased the right 'socket' (thanks for the advice).
It took a while to come ... but ... when it did ... no movement

Took a few (more) days of WD40
Plus a friend with the right length (approx 80cm) of high tensile steel pole (thanks Anthony)
... and ... the final 2 nuts finally popped off ...

What an effort !
