hey, started up my landy this morning to hear a grinding/chatter from the gearbox.
I have a s2a, well, it's a bit of a Frankenstein, with a 202 and lots of s3 bits.
Only thing I did today was give it a bit of a waterblast underneath.
It makes the noise when in neutral, in gear, o/d on, gets quieter when I push the clutch in while moving (drove to the end of the street and back) in 4th.
I will pull the floor off tonight and have a noisey, will also drain the gearbox oil and see if anything is in it.
is this the dreaded layshaft bearing failure?
And is it definitely a gearbox out job? will be doing it solo which I don't mind.

it's also noise in reverse.
I should also ask, is the way to tell what series gearbox I have just from a BL logo on it? I will have to have a look and see what it is, I know it's been replaced before, but that would've been in the last 10 years, so may be a series 3 box.
the sound doesn't change in pitch or get faster or louder with revs or speed..
I have a stethoscope around somewhere so will have a better listen tomorrow, as I had another listen it could be further forward, as it sounds like its coming from the front/bottom of the engine.. hmm.

drop the oil and see if there are any part numbers on the stuff that comes out and put your finger in the drain hole and feel around for more.
if there is a lot of shiny stuff in the drained oil, run a magnet through it to see if it picks up steel, otherwise the shiny stuff will most likely be bronze/brass from bushes, bearings and syncro's.
if no bad stories, refill it and drive it again, if the oil is ok, there is no reason why you couldn't put it back in.

Drained the gearbox, and out came a synchro clip/spring.
atleast I know what's wrong, so far...
I'm guessing it's 3/4 synchro as every now and then it would catch changing into 4th.
I've just found a write up about replacing clips without removing the box.
silly question but has anyone done this?

Done.. put new clips in with the gearbox still in the landy.
I only had 1 clip out of 3, the first one actually went in quite easy, only took 3-4 minutes.
I just used my hands, kept moving it around until it was flat between the cogs the slid the selector over it then back to fourth and it clicked in.
second one gave me grief so stopped for lunch and had another crack, dropped it twice so had to fish i out from the drain hole, bent 2 with my pliers, so lucky I got 6 today.
just need to refill the box and stick the seatbox back in, removing this actually took over an hour as the p.o had siliconed and riveted it in along with all the floor panels and trans cover.. p.i.t.a.
definitely not as hard as I thought, the worst I've done before was changing an internal waterpump on a Nissan cefiro, that was infuriating.

Well done and congrats. I have been told the most important tool u need to do that job with the GB in situ is a bucket full of patience. Did u happen to take any pics while doing it?

damn, just turned it over and the noise is still there... I'm guessing a previous clip is stuck somewhere.
need to eat dinner so it'll have to wait till Saturday now.
I did take some pics, but honestly it's such a small hole and you can see much, once I've found the offending noise I'll post them up.

I did GB oil change when I bought my series and a heap of selector spring bits came out in various sizes. I suspect a PO had the same failure and couldn't get all the bits out. They did eventually....! I'm assuming its fixed as I don't need to double clutch between 3&4, but I do to make it easier on everything.

the guys at the landrover parts place said its particularly hard on them when coming back from 4>3, also a 202 is more powerful than stock, putting extra strain on it.
just went to turn it on again and now it won't turn over at all..
looks like I might have to conceit and pull the box out..
