View Full Version : Transmission "jumping" into neutral

Good morning folks.
Wondering if anyone has experienced their 6 speed apparently jumping into neutral and back while driving?
Started happening this morning. seems to be only under load up a hill. But a little randomly.
It does not appear to be torque related as I can accelerate on the flat at full throttle with out an issue and it does not appear to be related to a specific gear. Also happens both in Normal and Sport mode.
I was not towing. There are no visible leaks underneath. No error messages come up on the screen.
I simply lose drive to the wheels ( I see the taco rev) for a few seconds and then it drops back into gear and keeps driving.
Tried a full shut down and restart and it is still doing it.
Looks like I am off to MLR in the morning
 Any assistance would be appreciated.

Sounds like out of adjustment gearbox pivot. Here's the at home fix:

Thanks Mick,
The gear selector is not hard to move - but hopefully that is what it is.
The vehicle is still under warranty - so I wont go messing with it, if that is the cause, I'll get the experts to do it.

Its Sunday morning Mark, get out to the driveway with your morning coffee, turn on the radio, get under and fix it :p
Yours wont be corroded, it will just be out of adjustment (has happened to me and is annoying but a 5 minute fix).
Anyway, I'm sure that will be your problem and it's a simple fix. Good luck !

GRRR,
I just took it out to try and get a clearer idea of symptoms. I know I saw the taco jump up as it lost drive - that's how I am sure it was dropping into Neutral - but I am unsure if the display showed it as changing from D to N.
Of course now, no matter what I try - I can't get it to misbehave
I might pull the cover off and at least make sure it's all clean and lubricated.
After all.... I'm not fishing, which is where we were going when it decided to play up. :(

My favourite kind of fault ... Only occurs when you're going to have some fun.
You'll likely find it is a half a hair out of adjustment.

Hahah or never happens when you take it to get looked at and 5kms down the road after you leave it plays up again!!

Of course now, no matter what I try - I can't get it to misbehave :mad:Does applying just a little pressure on the lever towards neutral cause drive to disengage?

Does applying just a little pressure on the lever towards neutral cause drive to disengage?
 It certainly does.
I had to move the stick a little bit, but it will disengage drive while still showing D on the dash.
So I suspect Mick has hit it on the head.
Of course its not misbehaving at all now.... but I'll get the dealer to take a look this week - it's nearly due for it's next service anyway.

The sensitivity of the lever's position should be enough to get the dealer to do the adjustment.

Spoke to MLR Monday morning and after some discussion booked it in - but not until 1st Dec.
Was going to watch it closely.... but as tonight something has detonated -it's off to the dealers on a flat bed in the morning.
Land Rover assist are sending it to ULR.

"Detonated" is not a good word to hear in relation to a car ... what happened ?
