Hi all

I have a 96 Defender 130 with the 300TDi.
It has just clocked up 240,000km and time for yet another timing belt. The first change I did and used the minor kit. Belt has been replaced twice since and used minor kit.

My question is about the timing cover replacement. The big difference in the Major and Minor kits is AFAIK the timing cover. Each time the belt is replace it is in good shape and little dust. Seals are replaced each time and so far so good.

I am thinking the fan bearing will eventually go as nearly all the other belt bearings have been replaced. So should I just replace the major kit with cover and be done with it?

regards

Hi mate,

I personally would leave it be for the time being, the bearing in myn has just started to go at 415k but at $350+ for a new cover I would be trying to get as many k's as possible out of it.
Unless of course your wanting peace of mind for a trip or the like!

You can just replace the bearing, you know. A hydraulic press and some care is needed.

There are other threads on bearing replacement if you look for them.
