Morning everyone,
I am in a spot of trouble, I borrowed my parents TD5 110 defender and when i was putting the hand brake on in there driveway something on the hand brake went twang and now the hand brake is not working.
I am rebuilding a 1960 series 2 at the moment so i am hoping it is the same set up :D
Does anyone know how the handbrake is connected?
cheers for your help everyone

On my Puma there's a big thick cable coming out the back of the handbrake leading into the brake enclosure behind the transmission. I'd hazard a guess that this cable is what went "twang" at one end or the other.
From vague memory it was a similar arrangement in my older version but I've never replaced either so I can't offer much help there.

Yep except from memory the series two didn't have a cable, it was mechanical. My guess is that the cable has broken.

Funny enough - my td5 went twang last month. in my case it was the cable at the hanbrake end. I could pull the lever nearly vertical with no resistance. I had it fixed in the last service. (I did drive it around for a few months though, and discovered that High 1st is not enough to hold it on a slope as it will move forward very slowly.)
You do need to drop the rear prop shaft, hand brake drum. Also need to disconnect the cable at the lever end. I think it would take a good couple of hours to replace.

Thanks for the info/help everyone.
It was the cable that went TWANG, transmission end. Brother and i have dropped all the parts off and are on our way back from rovacraft who had the cable for $44 bargain.
Also found the TD5 is missing two plugs from the gearbox. No oil in it at all. Looks fairly recent too, so we are tending to that also
