Traded my D2 TD5 in last week on an Amarok. Due to the mounting faults ( 3 amigos ) oil leaks and just general rundown old age ( it's a 2001 ) I was willing to take a low trade in value.
Today when I went to pick it up, the 3 Amigos came out to play and the wholesaler wouldn't take it for the same price. I applied some pressure and got the deal done. But Jeez it took the enjoyment out of the purchase.

You should have given us an option on here, at least it would have gone to people who care. Even if it's for parts to keep others running. I don't imagine it would have been a very good trade in price. People are scared to touch them.

why would the 3 amigoes scare you?

We traded our 2001 D2 in on an Amarok, after taking everything off it, we got $6000 for it 3yrs ago.
You'll love the Rok, not as good offroad as the D2, but it tows better and is a brilliant car to drive, so comfy :burnrubber::BigThumb:

Or fuel pump regulator leaks, the oil in the harness doesn't drive you insane, can't open the back door after 100ks on a dirt road, clutch ****s itself, head gasket goes, manifold warps and snaps studs, oil pump bolt lets go, 3 amigos:mad:
Should I go on:angel:

It would almost certainly still be comfortable if that happened, just a little slower... ;)

My young bloke is in the process of getting rid of my old D2 and replacing it with a new Amorok as well. Don't know if he's going to trade it or sell privately yet - depends on the offers he gets.
I went with him to test drive a couple of Amorok's a couple of weeks ago - still wouldn't mind one of them myself. :D
His biggest decision will be manual or auto. He's a bit concerned with the auto not having low range. But I got him to run an auto up a pretty steep embankment when we took it for a test drive (much to the disdain of the sales rep who was in the vehicle with us). Holding the auto in low gear, it crawled up there easily - plenty of torque even at low revs. For what he wants the vehicle for, the auto should easily do everything he wants to.
One thing that we learnt while at the VW dealers is not to take any notice of what the sales reps tell you. The one that we had knew absolutely nothing about the vehicles. Was even trying to tell us that they don't have a leaf sprung rear end - even though there was one parked right next to his desk inside the showroom and you could clearly see the leaf springs inside the rear wheel arch. Got me buggered how some of these idiots get a job. ;)

I thought about selling it to forum members, but I would have had to tell you'se what was wrong it. Most of the above, or at lest due.
Took the Amarok off road yesterday and it preformed quite well. Traction control and hill descent is generations ahead of the D2. Had a lot of fun with the stability control, (which can't be switch completely off ) the off road mode allows you to hange the tail out abit, than it pulls it back in line. Than you hit the button to deactivate TC and you hang it out drift style and pulls it back again. Makes a crap driver look good.
I still not sure about auto or manual, but the manual has deep low range.

I don't mean to put a downer on it all but I hope very much you got a good one, I work very closely with technicians at Volkswagen Osborne park and without exception they all admit the Amarok is by far the worst car VW has ever made.

That's right Dave, the Disco was THE ground breaker. Would be nice if we could down load an app to the Discovery as an up date.

Yeh I read a far bit of the problems. But they seem to be more the early ones. Rangers have their problems too. You could find fault with any car.
I never take much notice of dealer "technicians" no matter what the brand, they all say the stuff they work on are cr#p.

On the contrary, I believe you can always tell a good car brand by the cars the technicians drive. Most of those techs drive Golfs, Sicroccos and Polos.

While in the same neighbourhood (Osbourne Park) - drop into Barbagallo's Land Rover service centre and see how many of the "technicians" there drive Land Rovers.

Why put technicians in inverted comas?
This is probably the subject of another thread, but I do believe that a good
middle range car brand will be shown by the choices of the technicians that work
there. They see the worst of what comes in and if they still choose to spend their
own money on that brand then it must be doing something right.
After your comment I ask some friends the question, they happen to be either
service managers or 2oc's for 4 major dealers in the area. They confirmed
that their technicians drive what they work on, but only the better, non problematic
models. Except for 1, he told me that none of his techs would ever dream of driving
that brand due to the inherent reliability issues and repair costs.
I'll give my friend at barbagallos a call on Monday and see what she says, but to
A certain extent your right, the techs won't be able to afford a lot of the newer model
land rovers any way.
Always listen to the people that know.

But the VW "technicians" can afford to buy an Amorok ??????
Check your price lists mate - the Amorok is more expensive than the Defender, and not a hell of a lot behind a Discovery (depending on specifications chosen for both vehicles).
I've always done my own research on vehicles I've bought, based on the opinions of knowledgeable people and experienced owners of the same models. I have never, and would never consider, looking at what the "technicians" drive as any basis for my choices. Has worked well for me so far. ;)
As an example, I'm fully aware of the known issues with the Amorok (and the Disco's too for that matter). Nothing that I'm aware of would put me off buying either vehicle.
Yes - the technicians will see the bad side of every model - you don't generally take a vehicle in for repair if there's nothing wrong with it. ;)

I was in Europe for 4 months this year and spent a lot of time in a 2014 Touran 2.0 Diesel, what a soulless car!
2011 in Europe I had a Peugeot 1991 coupe auto for a few months. The only thing wrong with it, it did not have air-conditioning, it was really needed with the seriously hot weather. The 'auto' was great!

$40,000 for an Amarok on average, the Trendline is $37,990 drive away at the moment, ours is the Limited Edition Trendline(had a few extras) and was $47,000 3yrs ago, they have come down in price quite a lot, they are extremely popular now, about $15,000 to $20,000 cheaper than the Defender.
We've had 1 issue with our Rok in 3yrs, that's pretty good I think, it was a known issue, was fixed with the upgrade under warranty no questions asked, with a further 2yrs 200,000ks warranty on the parts and labour.

Yeah - must admit we have been looking at the higher end of the range. The one I nearly bought was a Highline, and that is probably what the young bloke will end up with as well.
They had a very nice looking Canyon in at the dealership when we were there - I liked it - but not at the price they are asking for it. :o

Top of the second page,:D
I worked at a Sydney Bitsa****ie dealer in the early 80s, and they had a heap of Japanise mechanics doing the predelivery of the new cars. Their qualifications weren't recognised in Oz so they could only do the Predelivery. I think they were technicians. Good little workers and I think they slept three to a locker.:p

When they stopped learning how to diagnose things themselves and starting relying a computer to do that for them, now they just throw parts at cars until it's fixed.

I have just tried ARB and TJM but neither of them make recovery points for the Rok.

Latest generation of Amarok is not affected Frank. They have an updated engine, which does not include the "cheat" programming.;)
Shaun has checked, and his is not subject to any re-call / update etc. also very easy to check on the VW website which models are affected.
But even those which are affected have no problem being registered in any state in Australia. They are not in breach of current Australian emissions standards.

I'll bet this breach has cost VW a lot of customers, would be a good time to be bargaining for a new VW, regardless of whether it meets Australian standards, mud sticks, Regards Frank.
