Hi guys, I am the proud new owner of Sweet Pea.......a 1950 Series 1 80". Thanks to Glen for helping fulfil a big dream!!!

It has just arrived at my mechanics from QLD and NSW being NSW the brakes aren't up to muster for blue slip. I expected this but what I am asking is can anyone recommend a good classic land rover mechanic in Sydney? My mechanic can look at it but given the speciality nature of the vehicle if I can have someone with particular knowledge in this field all the better.

I am very new to this site so please bear with me as I can only assume that this been discussed before.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Can you give us an idea in which part of Sydney you (or, preferably the S1) are located?

Thanks. Had you been out west, I could have made a recommendation.

I don't know much about the Series 1 but I wouldn't have thought the brakes were anything special so any mechanic (well, old school mechanic :) ) would be able to fix them.

Ben, a couple of suggestions. Firstly S1 brakes were never very startling, and you are going to have to learn to drive accordingly, but (providing all four brakes are still working properly) you could (a)try a more sympathetic mechanic or better still (b) look around for some softer compound brake linings. Whether these are available in said sizes I don't know but in heavy vehicle circles there are different degrees of brake shoe compounds available.
Apart from that you will possibly have to make a decision between authenticity or modifications.
Best of luck and I am happy to see that she got there in one piece.
Regards
Glen

Green Light Car Care have been recommended by a few Landy owners on here. They're at Thornleigh.

More than that is that there is a brake parts specialist that shares a wall with greenlight.

Apart from the master cylinder and the 1/4" brake pipes the brake mechanisms are standard with the 88" models right through to SIII. You may want to consider fitting a PBR44 inline brake booster.

BTW After being a stalled project for 5 years, my ex-RACQ '51 left the farm and came up to Sydney this week.

Its getting there!!!!

Turns out the master cylinder needs to be worked on and Carl (mechanic) has been really really good. There is a brake specialist next door so expect the blue slip not to long after the brakes are finished.

Will update when I know more

I won't admit that there have been S1 advice given to Carl from AULRO members though. ;)

looks like its already been 'sanded' :)Don't you mean "standard"?

Standard 1950s RACQ fleet colour.

The chassis was sand blasted, repainted, engine professionally reconditioned, gearbox rebuilt, new wheel bearings all round, brakes overhauled, replacement steering box, new tie rod ends all over, steering relay overhauled, steering wheel and steering wheel centre reconditioned, instruments reconditioned. All this was done for LR60th, the remaining steps were painting the other panels and then 6 months before Cooma my finances went through the floor when two tennants stopped paying rent and I had to cover the mortgages rates etc myself. After that I lost interest in it. :BigCry:

Only got any interest in things back when I bought the SIII FFR in 2009.

BTW: Am waiting to hear if Sweetpea passes its blue slip. Its been up at the inspector since this morning (not that I've been spying or anything, just my RRc is there today)
