The basic story is my off road toy is broken(read- I broke the 3rd timing chain on the Discovery's TD5 motor).
Having recently bought a cross over camper we decided a 4 wheel drive was still required to get to where we want be with safety of getting out.
At this point I offered the GLW the chance to get away from our preferred breed of vehicle.
I got a strange look and got "We still need a Land Rover".
At this point I new this was not a argument to follow so I just went with the flow.
You could say Land Rovers are skin deep with me.

A bit of a look at all the options and revisiting many times we decided on a plan.
I'll build up a 110 Defender(Puma) as tourer and set up my RRC(daily driver) as a back up rig.
Both units will be able to tow and I can use parts off the Disco to achieve this.

I've had an expensive fortnight now.
We got onto a recently traded 2011 Defender that will suit our needs.
It's done 104,000Km and I supplied my new tyres to get a few dollars off the price.
This will be a good base to set up what I want and the way I want it.
Once the paperwork was approved we found TJM are having a sale
On order is a Bull bar, 12'000lb winch and remote, 80 channel UHF, air compressor and some other stuff.
I'm going to fit a Mulgo ex-box that is now on order through Daniel .
It will contain all my electrical upgrades including a headlamp kit.
Drivesafe has offered to build a 1 off so the relay's can go in the ex-box.
The 2nd battery will be the canker from the Disco and will be under the right seat with the air compressor.
It'll be linked by one of Drivesafe's duel battery/winch controllers.
A swing a way wheel from Murray will be fitted early next year as production catches up.
I'm hoping the roof rack will be able to fit although I'll have to raise the front deck.
The windows get tinted next Wednesday also.

Thanks to Mick Marsh for dropping us off to pick up the new toy and for the picture.
I'd like to thank Tim, Murray and Daniel for their customer service.

I know threads with out pictures are frowned on so here's what I'm starting with...

Alien What can I say to tell you how sorry I am.
As a" sort of Victorian" ( moved from Qld Fourteen years ago)I really do not know how to tell you how grieved I am. If I am, in any way, responsible for any of the blame you feel Victorians have to share all I can say again is SORRY.
Regards to you , You lucky bastard.

You'll have to get on to this TV show
Bad Ink - A&E (http://www.aetv.com/bad-ink)
to get the Discovery changed to a Defender.

"Particularly the Victorian folk"!
I think you mean "Particularly Chops". He's the one who loves his Defender.
If you'd listened to Gav or myself, you'd be getting a 101 or a Perentie. It's not too late. I can find one for you.

I was wondering what the significants of the Defended picture was in the Spotted thread Mick, now it all becomes clear.

Good luck with the new purchase Kyle, looking forward to seeing it's build up. Hope your back on the racks soon.

Cheers,
Dave.

Thruth is,,, he's seen the light :D.
He has seen how at ease these vehicles are when in their element,,, (that'll be like,, "all the time" ;)) and has made an extremely wise decission to build up the "ideal expedition touring vehicle" from said Defender Puma.

Good onya Kyle, look forward to joining you and Coral on some excursions :D

Ohhh,,, and YES, I LOVE MY PUMA :D
And Chris, (Rangieman) did'nt mind driving it either the other day :D

Onya Kyle, like so many people these days, blame anyone but your self. Whilst I admit Mick and Marcus are both a bad influence, you must take responsibility for your own actions. :p

I know where your coming from but deep down I'll go with the lets blame Chops idea.:P

A few of the goodies on the Disco will go onto the Defender or the RRC.
I've got a list going already of who wants some of the other bits.
Not sure if I'll wreck it out or pass it on once I've got what I need of it.
I'm concentrating on the build up first.

Wow!!!! Well done!! So, do us 'fantastic and not guilty' South Australians get to look at it this year at Melrose? Hope so, as we're planning to follow a few Victorians back for a week of looking around. Re Disco, you need to transfer your signature bonnet art work over!! Thinking the Disco might lend itself to a large diesel conversion...... Is the Td5 a self destructed write off?

Sweet!

Recon Id have a crack at it... Seen a RR classic with one in it... Think the Disco engine bay is the same size... :D

525 HP and 1850 ft-lb at 1200 rpm., you might need to upgrade the drive line.

I've been informed that we should attend Melrose this year so I'll do as I'm told, again.
The bonnet will most likely be hung up out the back as a reminder.
The motor would need a new head this time around and I'm sure there is now an oil flow issue in the block.
A upgraded motor was thought about but not an easy job without the right gear to do it.

I like Ian's find but...
We just paid $4,000 for a new turbo on one at work so doubt I'll get it passed by the Minister inside.
